Pioneers Go East Collective is a multicultural Radical Queer arts and cultural grassroots collective of performance and visual artists in New York City. Serving communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn, this non-profit arts organization presents dozens of free workshops, a series of new work performances, and the annual Out-Front! Festival.

History[edit]

Founded at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in 2010, Pioneers Go East Collective collaborates with community and arts organizations across New York City.[1] The name of the collective is inspired by Walt Whitman’s poem “Pioneers! O Pioneers!”, an appeal to search for a brighter future. Pioneers Go East Collective is comprised of artists who explore LGBTQ and Feminist stories of collective courage. The performance work incorporates multimedia art including live projection, pre-recorded video, sculpture, dance, and theater in immersive and sight specific installations.

Pioneers Go East Collective has no permanent presentation space, instead bringing its programming to venues such as Judson Memorial Church[2], The LGBT Center (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center)[3], Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, BRIC Arts Media[4], Center for Performance Research[5], JACK, Ars Nova (theater), St. Ann’s Warehouse, The Exponential Festival at The Brick Theater, and galleries and festivals in Upstate New York, including Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts, Collar Works gallery[6], and in Toronto at Buddies in Bad Times.

Since its inception, Pioneers Go East Collective has been led by Director Gian Marco Riccardo Lo Forte, Bessie Awards recipient Philip Trevino, and Daniel Diaz, in collaboration with a rotating roster of over 25 artists. As of 2023, the collective consists of 7 members.[7][8]

Programs[edit]

Pioneers Go East Collective supports independent and emerging artists based in New York City through the Crossroads curated series featuring a diverse aesthetic and conceptual approaches to performance.[2] Additionally, Pioneers Go East Collective presents the annual Out-Front! Festival at The LGBT Center (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center) and Abrons Art Center. The Festival was founded in January 2023 and highlights new performance works with a focus on dance.[9][10] Pioneers Go East leads free workshops through their NEXT series at partner organizations throughout New York City.[3]
