Planet Ice Peterborough is a 1,500-capacity[1] ice rink located in Bretton, Peterborough. It is the home of the Peterborough Phantoms National Ice Hockey League team.
History[edit]
The rink was built from an existing warehouse on Mallard Road in Bretton, on the outskirts of Peterborough, being modified and turned into an ice rink, with construction starting in 1980. It was built by Huntingdon-based Anglia Leisure Ltd at a cost of £1.75 million, with construction completing in Summer 1981. It was unofficially opened as the East of England Ice Rink on 13 November 1981 as the first ice rink to be opened in the UK since the 1960s.[2][3]
Less than a year later in the summer of 1982, the Peterborough Pirates ice hockey team was formed, and used the rink as home ice.[4] On 5 December 1982, the Pirates had their first game which was attended by over 1,000 people against the Grimsby Buffaloes, where they won 11-9.[5]
It became the home arena of the Peterborough Phantoms in 2002 when the team was founded after the Pirates folded.[4]
The rink also serves Lavazza coffee and Papa John's pizza from a store located inside the arena.[6]
