From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Plessey Semiconductors Ltd is a UK-based developer of advanced optoelectronic technology solutions..[1]. The company provides volume processing of its unique and proprietary GaN-on-Silicon platform for a wide range of optoelectronic devices and systems with focus on microLED displays and technology solutions[2].

With headquarters located in Plymouth, England, Plessey operates 6" (150mm) and 8" (200mm) wafer processing facilities to undertake design, test and assembly of products, and a comprehensive suite of photonic characterisation and applications laboratories.

History[edit]

Plessey Semiconductors Ltd was established in 2010[3][4] after a management buy-out[5] and acquired their current Headquarters, in Roborough, Plymouth, United Kingdom.

Information on the history prior to 2010 can be found by visiting The Plessey Company plc.

Manufacturing[edit]

Plessey’s LEDs are made in a monolithic process using gallium nitride on a substrate of silicon (GaN-on-Si), instead of sapphire[6][7].

GaN on Silicon Platform[edit]

Plessey's GaN-on-Silicon processed microLED arrays on wafer

In 2012, Plessey acquired CamGaN, a start-up company and a spin-out from Cambridge University, along with the rights to the GaN-on-Silicon platform[8]. Plessey then developed the platform at the manufacturing facility in Plymouth which enabled mid- and high-power LEDs for lighting markets and now, microLEDs for display markets[9]
