PolarPanel is an American clean energy and cold chain company based in Houston, Texas. It was created through a technological partnership between the University of Houston and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to commercialize intellectual property developed at Johnson Space Center.[1] The company installs photovoltaic systems on refrigerated containers using thermal energy storage to reduce diesel usage in intermodal freight transport.[2]
History[edit]
PolarPanel was founded in Houston, Texas in 2017 with the mission to develop the first zero emission refrigerated railcar.[3] The company started with a retrofitting model to replace the diesel engines used in refrigerated shipping using solar thermal energy and phase-change material (PCM).[3] The company received initial funding from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)[4][5] and the United States Department of Energy[6][7][4], and was a cohort member of the MassChallenge startup accelerator in 2020.[8][9][4]
Awards[edit]
PolarPanel was featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2019.[10]
