Charles Bamford spends a significant amount of time talking to specialists in the energy business about the impact of technology and regulatory initiatives. He has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech and an MBA in Quantitative Methods from The Stern School of Business at New York University.
The firm began its focus on software in 1988 when it began recruiting for Phibro Energy, a spinoff of Salomon Brothers that traded oil. Rockwood later migrated into searching and finding traders who could trade not only the physical commodity but the financial commodity as well.
As the NYMEX began to add new products, such as natural gas futures and power futures and options, Rockwood followed the evolution of the energy markets from oil to natural gas to power. By 2000, Rockwood had a collection of trading and so-called rocket scientist talent contacts that it worked with for the next 10 years. The firm also began to work for the support functions in energy firms, which included risk management, structured deals, and energy risk management systems.
Enron and its spinoffs were clients of Rockwood. In 2012, the firm began to transition into renewables as renewable markets took off. Today, Rockwood deals mainly with renewable energy firms.
