Ollie (December 21, 2015[1]), nicknamed Polite Cat or He Looks Very Polite, is an Internet celebrity cat. He was primarly known for his unusual smile, caused by a misplacement on his jaws.[2] Ollie went viral upon a fake conversation between a person and "Bruce Landlord", posted on Instagram.[3][4]

As of August 31, 2022, the offical social media Twitter account of Ollie has 1,354 followers,[5] 1,775 likes on Facebook,[6] and 449,000 followers on Instagram.[7] On 2020, A YouTube channel named "Beluga", which currently has over 9 million subscribers, based on short skits on the social network Discord and featuring Ollie's likeness as the main character, rose him to fame once again.[8]

Background[edit]

Despite most of his past being unclear, Khar Aman Ra, who has claimed to be the cat's owner, stated on a Facebook post he found Ollie "was not on a good place". He said he found Ollie on October 2016, when the cat was 10 months old, and his former owner did not gave Ollie training nor love.[9]

Expansions and variations of memes[edit]

The first original "polite cat" meme was posted on humor website 9GAG. The post read: "My face when someone expects me to be excited about something that I'm not excited about", followed by an image macro of Ollie.[4] However, Ollie rose to fame due to a fake Facebook Messenger text conversation between a person and a fictional landlord named "Bruce" posted on Instagram. The conversation was about the landlord explaining no pets were allowed inside the apartment, but when shown a photo of Ollie, the landlord states he will make an exception because he "looks very polite". The post recieved more than 21,000 likes in one week.[10] The meme was also shared on websites like Reddit[11] and Twitter.[12]

Since then, several variations of the meme have been posted, including variations with the character Felix Argyle from the Re:Zero manga and anime,[13] another variation featuring a red panda wearing a hat,[14] and finally, a version with a bulldog instead of Ollie.[15] After losing popularity,[4] Ollie once again became a trend when YouTuber Beluga, who currently has over 9 million subscribers, used Ollie's likeness as his Discord-based skits' main character.[8]
