He uploaded his valedictorian speech to his Youtube channel.[5] After high school, Darryl enrolled at Central Michigan University, where he attended for 1.5 years until he dropped out because he was making $30,000 per month being a Youtuber.[6][7] Darryl references dropping out of school in his song, "Take Me Serious", where he states "Why would you stay in school, when you making more than the teachers?"[8] After dropping out of Central Michigan, Darryl moved to Hollywood, California to be a full time Youtuber.

Career[edit]

Youtube Career[edit]

DDG is one of the most successful African American Youtubers. His over 4 million subscribers across all channels are known as the DDG Squad.[9] He is best known on Youtube for his daily vlogs, but he also has a gaming channel and has done reactions, pranks, skits, and parodies. He is a frequent collaborator and has been associated with MegaMcqueen, ChinoAlphaWolf, MysticGotJokes, Kennedy Cymone, NatesLife, and Jilly Anais.

Music Career[edit]

DDG always had an interest in music and started doing music while in school, but it was not until he started posting freestlye vlog videos and diss tracks did the world know of his musical talent. His most famous diss track was on Lil Yachty, which was called, "Big Boat". Big Boat went viral on DDG's Youtube channel and has received over 10 million views.[10] The song's popularity caused Lil Yachty to set the record straight on Instagram that he did not have any "beef" with DDG.[11] The fact that people liked his song so much, caused DDG to want to explore music more seriously. DDG released two songs in 2016 entitled, Balenciagas and Free Parties, both produced by Zaytoven. The songs were both well received in the Youtube community but not well known in the general music community. Realizing that his songs were good and that he needed more music fans to hear them, DDG teamed up with Famous Dex for a song entitled, "Lettuce". The track was initially released on DDG's Youtube channel on his 20th birthday, but Worldstar contacted DDG to allow them to exclusively release the video.[12] The video did very well and hours after its release, DDG had emails from 5 major record labels. Now that DDG had the music industry’s attention, he decided to make a song entitled “Take Me Serious” which demanded that the music industry take him serious as a musician and not see him as just a Youtuber making music as a hobby. In June of 2018, DDG inked a multi-million dollar record deal with Epic Records.[13]

Givenchy[edit]

On November 23, 2017, DDG released his hit single, "Givenchy". The song was released on Worldstar's Youtube channel. The song has received over 16 million views [14]and has over 6 million streams on Spotify.[15] The song is DDG's most popular to this date and has earned him interviews and articles with Genius[16], and Mass Appeal [17]. Complex identified "Givenchy" as a song "Bout to Blow in 2018".[18]

Take Me Serious EP[edit]

On March 17, 2018, DDG released his debut EP, which included 7 tracks, including 4 unreleased songs. The debut EP peaked at #7 on the iTunes hip hop charts and already has over 17 million streams on Spotify.
