Popeyes' Chicken Sandwich is a chicken sandwich produced and sold by Popeyes, a multinational chain of fast food restaurants. It was launched in August of 2019 to help Popeye's compete better with Chick-Fil-A. The sandwich was an instant hit, went viral on social media, and widely covered by the media. The sandwich helped Popeye's gather an estimated $23 million in free publicity since its launch.[2] Popeyes stores have been routinely hit with long lines and often selling out of the sandwich.[3] On August 27th, 2019, approximately two weeks after the launch, Popeyes announced that it had officially sold out of the chicken sandwich across the country.[4] One person in Tennessee sued Popeye's claiming that his inability to get the sandwich has caused him to be "hustled out of money", making Popeye's guilty of "false advertising" along with "deceptive business practices".[5]

Ingredients[edit]

The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich consists of fried chicken patty on a brioche bun with several pickles and mayonnaise.[6][7] The sandwich can be ordered with a spicy cajun sauce variation.

Marketing[edit]

Advertising agency GSD&M was the agency of record when Popeye's made its first announcement of the new sandwich. The marketing campaign started on Aug. 12th, 2019 at 7:32pm with a simple tweet on the Popeye's Twitter feed. It is estimated that Popeye's has received over $23 million in free publicity from the new product launch.[8] The new sandwich went viral immediately and has prompted responses from nearly every fast food chain including McDonalds, Chick-Fil-A, and Wendy's.[9] [10] Popeye's has reported a 103% increase in traffic in the days following the launch of the new sandwich.[11]
