Porrima is a Swiss experimental research vessel and scientific motor ship focused on innovations dealing with ecological issues, especially on sea pollution and renewable energies as solutions.

Its main principle is based on the circular economy and more particularly the blue economy.[1]

On December 18, 2021, the 11 year-old catamaran, renamed[2] after the ancient Roman goddess Porrima, symbol of the future, and pregnant women, set sail from Osaka to start a new challenge: fully equipped with a dozen improved or experimental technologies,[3] the ship is to achieve a zero emission trip around the world, propelled completely by wind, solar and hydrogen power, from renewables like nanoplastics found in the ocean.

The goal is also to both share its concerns on environmental issues and its results to local scientists, entrepreneurs, sponsors, media and children.[4]

Achieved stopovers[edit]

The ship has made stopovers at:[5]

  • Osaka, Japan - December 18, 2021
  • Kaohsiung, Taiwan - January 1, 2022
  • Dubai, UAE - March 17, 2022

The Porrima project[edit]

The ship combines:[6]

  • solar power with a 540 m2 (5,800 sq ft) range solar panels
  • wind power with a 800 m (2,600 ft) long artificial intelligence kite, developed by SkySails
  • an hydrogen fuel power system to collect and transform nanoplastics, developed by Eden Tech

But Porrima also carries a few more technologies[7] to be tested onboard, such as:

  • a Li-Fi diving mask developed by Professor Suat Topsu and his team
  • a new system of sound filtration developed by Dr. Jorge Reynolds Pombo
  • an underwater weather forecast station developed by BIOceanOr[8]
  • a 3D underwater vision system developed by Shawn Frayne's team at Looking Glass Factory
