Powhatan School is an independent, PK-8, coed, day school in Boyce, VA. The school enrolls about 25 students in each grade for a total of 250. 25% of families receive some form of financial aid.[1] Powhatan was named the Best Private School in the region by The Winchester Star newspaper and a Top K-8 Private School by Virginia Living magazine.[2][3]
History[edit]
Founded in 1948 as Blue Ridge Country Day School in nearby Millwood, the school moved to its current location on the Crocker estate in Boyce and was renamed after the existing home, Powhatan. In 1988, the original building burned down, destroying all property and records. School resumed three days later and the campus was rebuilt, expanding to eight buildings over the following decades. Originally drawing students primarily from Clarke County, now as many of 40% of students reside in nearby Winchester with others commuting from Frederick and Loudon Counties in Virginia as well as the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
Curriculum[edit]
Powhatan offers a literature-based curriculum with an emphasis on reading, writing and public speaking across all subjects. The Nature Enhanced Approach to Learning (NEAL) program incorporates outdoor education, in partciular on the school's 47-acre Crocker Conservancy nature preserve which ajoins the main campus.[4] STEM and innovation labs allow students to design and build eningeering prototypes and explore content through virtual reality.[5]
Student Activities[edit]
Powhatan competes against peer schools in soccer, cross country, volleyball, field hockey, basketball and lacrosse as well as Mathcounts.[6] On four "Winter Tuesdays," students have the option to ski or take part in special programming on campus. Each grade presents a performance annually, building to a seventh grade musical and an eighth grade Shakespeare production. Students compete in a year-long competition as part of either the "post" or "rail" teams, culminating in Field Day in the spring. Eighth graders deliver Chapel Talks to the entire community on an important topic of each student's choosing.
