Practice Safe Sets are film production protocol guidelines produced in response to industry changes caused by the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19). These guidelines are the product of a collaboration of Canadian commercial film production professionals with the goal to engage the worldwide film production industry to share and develop ideas on how to address the risk of COVID-19 transmission in the commercial film workplace. Practice Safe Sets uses the website www.practicesafesets.tv[1] to deliver its information and engage with the worldwide commercial film production community to maintain a set of guidelines that adjust to the evolving landscape of production as the pandemic continues.

Risk strategy[edit]

  1. Define a process flow chart for each component of production
  2. Identify potential risks of coronavirus disease 2019 transmission within the work being done
  3. Put solutions that mitigate the risk in place

Creating redundancy[edit]

Keep Covid Out. As of late April it appears that there are many asymptomatic carriers of coronavirus disease 2019. Until testing is commonly available we can only address symptomatic people. Raising awareness of Covid symptoms, and ensuring that anyone with symptoms does not come into the work place is the first step.

Create a hostile environment for COVID-19 transmission. Within our work places we need to identify where and how coronavirus disease 2019could be transmitted between people, and use the tools we have to make it hard as possible for the virus to transmit. Providing work places where people can physical distance, minimize surface interaction, increase fresh air flow and routine sanitizing will impede transmission.

Improve personal behavior to minimize the possibility of contacting COVID-19. Every individual has the opportunity to minimize their risk by evolving their behavior. By using a combination of Physical Distancing, Personal Protective Equipment, and personal sanitizing, each individual can lower the potential of contracting Covid.

Working as a group. There is safety in numbers, and the risk goes down with universal participation. Each person has the ability to both protect themselves, and their co-workers from Corona transmission. If wearing a simple mask drops the potential transmission distance from 6’ to 1’, and everyone has a mask on, then we have significantly dropped the risk of transmission.

The benefits of using common standards across the community will both raise the effectiveness of the effort, and improve the level of confidence in film production as a safe work place for everyone.
