Pratik Sinha

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Pratik Sinha is the founder of Altnews.in, a fact checking website. His fact-checking work has made him one of the most well known voices in India in the sphere of tackling fake news.[1][2][3] He is a former software engineer, who in 2017 decided to devote his life to fighting "fake news".[4]

Background

Pratik Sinha was formerly a software engineer by profession, with his area of concentration being in wireless and embedded systems. He was based out of Vietnam.[3][5] On returning to India, he launched a website called Truth of Gujarat.[5] He is also a member of Jan Sangharsh Manch,[6] a Gujarat based organisation which was co-founded by his father, Mukul Sinha, who was a lawyer and human rights activist who fought mainly for communal riot victims.[7][8]

Pratik Sinha founded Altnews.in in February 2017 as an alternate news platform rather than a fact checking website. But during that time, due to an increase of fake news, the focus became fact-checking and to fight "deliberate underground political propaganda".[9][10] Altnews has been set up as a non-profit and is funded through donations. Prominent donors have included Arundhati Roy's trust as reported in Rediff.com.[5] Since launching the website, he has received threats to his life, demanding that he stop producing content.[11][12] In 2017, Pratik Sinha was invited to the Google NewsLab Asia-Pacific Summit to discuss potential solutions to fake news.[9]

Views

Pratik Sinha has been quoted saying, "I have an ideological leaning. I am oriented towards the left", but he goes on to say he has no political leaning.[5]

Publications

Pratik Sinha along with the Altnews team have written and edited a book titled "India Misinformed: The True Story" published by HarperCollins which will be available in March 2019.[13][14]
