The Presidio Theatre is a modern performing arts center located adjacent to the parade grounds at the Main Post of the Presidio of San Francisco.
The mission of the Presidio Theatre is to ensure that the magic of live performance is accessible to the entire community. By reawakening an architectural jewel in the Presidio and creating a professionally run venue that reflects the rich diversity of the Bay Area, The Presidio Theatre encourages artists to grow and flourish.
The theatre was built in 1939 by the U.S. Army with funding from the Works Progress Administration. The theatre building is an example of Spanish Colonial style architecture, with a white facade, wide arches and flat stucco surfaces. From 1939 to 1994, the Presidio Theatre served members of the military and their families, screening movies and hosting live events or radio broadcasts. When the Army left the Presidio in 1994 and turned over the land to the National Park Service, the Presidio Theatre showed its last film, “Maverick,” on August 28 of that year. It was then left vacant for over twenty years.
From 2017-2019 the theatre was renovated, restoring original architectural details and adding modern theatrical lighting, sound, and projection capabilities. Excavation under the building doubled usable space inside the theatre, allowing for the creation of large dressing rooms, a lower lobby, and rehearsal studio. Two new wings accommodate catering facilities, a green room, and a loading area surrounding an outdoor plaza. During the renovation, the proscenium arch was moved forward to increase stage depth and ramps were built coming off the stage into the house. The renovation was spearheaded by Peggy Haas, and made possible with a donation by the Margaret E. Haas Fund and in partnership with the Presidio Trust.
