Pretty Little is an Australian restaurant.[1][2] It is based in Balaclava, Victoria.[1]
Description[edit]
The restaurant is relatively small, or 'diminutive',[1] with a capacity of 20 guests.[3] All guests sit around a singular oak communal dining table running along the length of the room.[1][2] Reviewer Dani Valent of the SMH said that the 'hybrid concept brings the easygoing generosity and garrulous engagement of dinner at a friend's house to a high-street setting'.[2]
All food is made in a domestic kitchen at the end of the table. Kitchen facilities are that which one would expect within a small townhouse. The sourdough is made in a Dutch oven that looks as if it could've been on special at Aldi. The venue operates without a kitchenhand, with the head chef and sous chef doing all the dishes themselves.[2] The venue's wine is sourced from Australia.[1]
Dishes served at the venue include steamed hapuka, lamb assiette, quince, and banana brioche. The wine list is sourced only from Victoria, Australia.[2] Dishes praised by revieweres include the housemade pickles, skin-on Jerusalem artichoke quarters, radish halves, onion petals on sheep's yoghurt, and whipped chicken mousse.[1] The cured swordfish was highlighted in particular by the Herald Sun.[1]
The soundtrack of the restaurant was described by the Herald Sun as 'a soundtrack of jazz fusion tunes'.[1]
History[edit]
The venue was opened in 2019 by Melbourne restauranteur Mike Byard.[2] Joseph Espuga spent time at Mugaritz prior to starting at Pretty Little.[1]
Reception[edit]
Writing in Sydney Morning Herald, Dani Valent gave the venue a score of 15/20, writing:[2]
"Everything looks good and eats well. Throughout the menu there’s evidence of classic technique, an engagement with ingredients, a sense of curiosity and play balanced with the restraint that’s generally born of experience. Nothing tries too hard or is showy. You sense a real desire to please and satisfy, to see smiles on patrons’ faces, not earnest perplexity."
Reviewer Dan Stock of the Herald Sun gave the venue a score of 14.5/20, writing:[1]
"don’t let the thought of eating with strangers put you off (if you only have eyes for your companion the table is large enough to discretely ignore your neighbours) for Pretty Little is a pretty excellent dinner party that’s big on all the good things in life."
