Priboy (Bulgarian: Прибой) is a village in western Bulgaria. It is located in Oblast Pernik, Obshtina Radomir.

Geography[edit]

It is located at the western end of the Radomir valley, along the river Struma. The village is located 38 km from Sofia; is close to Radomir, and is the first stop of the train, Priboy station.

History[edit]

There is a legend about the origin of the name of the settlement, which tells that thousands of years ago the river Struma flowed into a large lake and exactly where the present village is, the water made a breakthrough and the river changed its direction, and from there began to call it Priboy.

Archaeological discoveries in the area prove that there has been a settlement life here since ancient times. In two places in the countryside there are remains of prehistoric settlements. The local lands were inhabited in antiquity, as evidenced by traces of two settlements. One is located in the area "Selishte" and covered an area of about 200 acres. The remains of the other ancient settlement have been discovered in the Dzhinovtsi area near Vragolomova mahala.

The village of Priboy is the heir of an old medieval settlement, where the necropolis dating to the XII-XIV century was discovered. There are now single ceramic fragments left from the settlement, scattered on an area of about 50-60 decares. The existence of the village in the late Middle Ages is attested in Turkish sources - Ottoman tax documents.Rich information is provided by the extensive timar register of the Kyustendil Sandzak from 1570/73 year, according to which at that time there were two priests in the village of Priboy. From the same document we understand that Priboy had a privileged status (military settlement), it was inhabited by grandchildren who enjoyed certain tax benefits. This special category of Bulgarians has retained their privileges for a long time, as they are also present in the register of Zavaid soldiers (soldiers in reserve) from 1626/7 year with 7 military inns (families). The medieval village was built over a prehistoric Neolithic and an ancient settlement. Thus, in one place there was a multi-layered cultural layering, testifying to the settlement life, covering a huge period of time - from VI millennium BC. to the seventeenth century AD.

Religions[edit]

The entire population is made up of Orthodox Christians. The only well-preserved and surviving medieval monument is the Church of the Holy Mother of God, distinguished by its beautiful frescoes, and also very competently restored and preserved. There were other churches in the village, but they were destroyed a long time ago and only some toponyms now remind of their existence. This includes the medieval church in the area "Monastery", not far from the medieval village. There, 30-40 years ago, people discovered its foundations by building a new church and monastery above it, known as the Priboysky Monastery. There were probably medieval churches in two other places called "Church": one not far from the monastery, and the other at Vragolomska mahala. Today in these places, as well as in others, votive crosses are placed, known as: Votive "Holy Savior"; Rite "St. George" and Rite "St. Architect Michael".

  • Chitalishte "Svetlina", which in 2006 celebrates 70 years since its founding.
