Afolabi Olaoye (born 23 August 1961) is a Nigerian monarch. He is the 21st Soun of Ogbomosho[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life and ancestry[edit]

Oba Afolabi Olaoye, was born Prince Afolabi Olaoye on the 23 August 1961 into the family of Prince Samuel Oladunni Oyatoro Olaoye of the Olaoye Royal House which is one of the five royal families in the town of Ogbomosho. He is a direct descendant of the 9th Soun of Ogbomosho,Late Oba Laoye Orumogege of the Baiyewuwon ruling house of Ode-Aremo, Ogbomosho.[6][7]

Education[edit]

Afolabi Olaoye earned a BA Honors in English and Literary Studies from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria (formerly known as University of Ife) in 1982 and thereafter proceeded to the University of Ibadan where he obtained a master's degree in Industrial and Labor Relations with a focus on Human Resources Management in 1987[8][9]

Installation and Controversy[edit]

Prince Afolabi Laoye Orumogege lll was installed as the 21 Soun of Ogbomosho on the 8th of September,2023, thus succeeding Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi who transited to the great beyond on the 12 of December, 2021[10]

However, his installation is fraught with controversy as some members of his ruling family had earlier instituted a court case against his selection by the kingmakers citing the fact that he was not part of the selection process from the beginning and should not be crowned against their wish. This led to the state high court issuing an order a day to his installation as king restraining the governor and other state officials from presenting Olaoye with any instrument of office or issue any certificate to him until the final determination of the mandatory injunction already filed before the court. But the kingmakers went ahead on the morning of Friday September 8, stating that they were yet to receive any court order,performed the necessary rites, and proclaimed him His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]

Career[edit]

Prior to his installation,Prince Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye pastors the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus House, Washington DC.[22][23] The Soun-elect is the CEO of Peculiar People Management (PPM) and Peculiar Speakers, which are Management and Human Resource Consulting Companies. He is also the Chairman of Great Places to Work Institute, Nigeria, a global research and management consultancy company that recognizes the best workplaces in over 56 countries worldwide and provides premier business and advisory services. In addition, he is the chairman of both Quest Oil & Gas and Quest Engineering Company.

He serves on the Board of Trustees of Strategy for Mentoring Initiative & Leadership Empowerment (S.M.I.L.E), a young entrepreneurship for development and a non-profit organization. He also serves on the board of A Smile on Their Faces Initiative (a non-profit initiative focus group for people living with disabilities)[24]

Afolabi Laoye is also an Associate of the International Third World Leaders Association (ITWLA) chaired by the late Dr Myles Munroe, a forum created for the exchange of cross-cultural ideas globally. He represents Myles Munroe international in Nigeria.

In January 2009, he was invited to serve as an Advisor and Council Member on the Council for New Americans by the Maryland State Governor of the United States of America, Governor Martin OMalley. During his four-year tenure on the council, he assisted the Governor to form policies on immigrant integration into the state of Maryland[25]

Personal life[edit]

Afolabi Laoye is married to Omo Laoye and they are blessed with two children[26][27]
