Princess Augusta of Solms-Braunfels (German: Auguste Luise Therese Matilda zu Solms-Braunfels; July 25, 1804 - October 8, 1865) was Princess of Solms-Braunfels from the Solms family, daughter of Prince Frederick William of Solms-Braunfels and Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of Albert, Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.
Biography
Augusta was born on July 25, 1804, in Triesdorf. She was the fourth child and second daughter in the family of Duchess Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and her second husband Prince Frederick William of Solms-Braunfels. She had an older brother, William. Other children died at an early age before she was born. From her mother's first marriage, she also had an only brother, Prince Frederick, and a sister, Princess Frederica. Later, the family was replenished with younger sons, Alexander and Karl.
Her father was the fourth son of Ferdinand, Prince of Solms-Braunfels and served in the Prussian army, but already in 1805 he resigned because of his addiction to alcohol. Subsequently, he briefly participated in the War of the Fourth Coalition. In 1809, he received the rank of major general and an annual pension. He died when Augusta was nine years old. The mother soon married a third time to the British prince Ernst August, and in 1819 gave birth to the youngest son George who later became King of Hanover.
At the age of 23, Augusta became the wife of the 29-year-old Prince Albert of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.[1][self-published source?][better source needed] The young couple met at the court of the Prussian king. The groom was the younger brother of the ruling prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Friedrich Günter.[2] The wedding took place on July 26, 1827, in the Schonhausen Palace near Berlin. - Karl (April 30–May 9, 1828) lived for 10 days;
- Elisabeth (1833–1896) —wife of Leopold III, Prince of Lippe, had no children;
- George Albert (1838–1890) —the prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt in 1869–1890, was betrothed to Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, but the marriage did not take place after she fell in love with Grand Duke Vladimir; had an illegitimate daughter;
- Ernst Heinrich (March 15–19, 1848) lived for 4 days.
In 1845, her husband became the crown prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. However, Augusta did not live to see him enthroned, passing away at the age of 61 on October 8, 1865. Albert became prince two years later. He never married again.
