She was the second daughter of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty, born to Consort Xiao.[1] She had a brother, Prince Xu Li Sujie, and a sister, Princess Yiyang.
Early life
Princess Gao'an was born in 649 in Chengji, Longxi as the second daughter of Emperor Gaozong of Tang and Consort Xiao Shufei.
She was initially titled Princess Xuancheng,[1] but in 655 her mother, Consort Xiao Shufei, was executed and she was imprisoned in the palace along with her sister, Princess Yiyang.[2]
Married life
In 671, she married Wang Xu, the governor of Yingzhou.[3]
In 691, Wang Xu was executed for participating in opposition against Empress Wu Zetian, leading to Princess Gao'an's confinement.
Later life
In 705, after the "Shenlong Revolution" which forced Wu Zetian to abdicate, Emperor Zhongzong restored her status, elevating her to Grand Princess and granting her noble privileges. When Emperor Ruizong ascended the throne, she was renamed Princess Gao'an[3] and given additional land and income.
Death and burial
In May 714, she died at the age of 66 in Chang’an[1] and was buried in Qianling. Her epitaph was written by Duke Xu Guo, Su Ting, along with a memorial poem. According to the "Shendao Stele of Princess Gao'an", she had three sons: Wang Wei, Wang Hui and Wang Jian, who held various official titles in the Tang administration.
