Princess Hezheng (Chinese: 和政公主), 728 – July 28, 764 was a princess of the Tang Dynasty.
Background
Princess Hezheng, personal name not recorded, was the third daughter of Li Heng, the future Emperor Suzong of Tang. Her mother, Lady Wu, a concubine of Suzong, died at the age of 18 while she was only three. She was raised by Lady Wei, the crown princess of Li Heng. Because of her beautiful appearance and strong talent, she gained favor from Suzong.
Marriage
Princess Hezheng married an official, Liu Tan (柳潭）, in 750. Liu Tan's elder brother, Liu Cheng (柳澄), married Yang Guifei’s elder sister, who received the title “Lady of Qin”.
Participating in Ending An Lushan Rebellion and Tibetan Invasion
In the An Lushan Rebellion, An Lushan invaded Chang’an. Princess Hezheng recognized the importance of money, so she engaged in some businesses. And then she donated most of her profits for the war. She also told her brother, Li Yu, to focus on the rise and fall of the country, and to concern himself with the commoners. In 763, Tibet conquered Chang’an. She joined the Tang Army and participated in the battle.
Death
In 764, during the Tang-Tibet war, Princess Hezheng went to the palace to discuss strategies related to the war with Daizong. However, she was pregnant and close to her estimated date of delivery. She gave birth to her son the next day and died after childbirth because she was exhausted. Daizong was shocked, and he decided to mourn for three days for her.
The calligrapher Yan Zhenqing wrote her epitaph.
