Priya Punnoose MD is an American physician, educator, and political candidate running for Congress in Virginia's 11th congressional district in the 2025 special election. A dual board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, she currently serves as an Assistant Professor at the George Washington University School of Medicine and as faculty at Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C. In 2024, she was selected as the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) Congressional Fellow.[1]

Early life and education

Punnoose earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007. She received her M.D. degree, summa cum laude, from the American University of Antigua in 2014. She completed her psychiatry residency at Central Michigan University from 2015 to 2018, where she served as the resident representative to the Michigan Psychiatric Society. Punnoose pursued her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Children's National Medical Center, where she served as Chief Fellow from 2019 to 2020. She also completed a health policy fellowship at George Washington University in 2020.[2]

Medical career

Punnoose joined Children’s National Hospital in 2020, working in inpatient and emergency department psychiatry. She later served as Medical Director of Emergency Department Psychiatric Services and Associate Program Director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship. In 2024, she became an Assistant Professor at George Washington University School of Medicine.[3]

Punnoose received national media attention in 2022 when she was featured in an article in The Washington Post on the mental health crisis in children and adolescents. She was profiled as the attending psychiatrist leading rounds at Children’s National, and her clinical insights were cited to highlight the intensifying demand for pediatric psychiatric care during the COVID-19 pandemic.[4]

She has participated in numerous leadership initiatives, including co-chairing hospital-wide behavioral safety task forces and leading telehealth and patient satisfaction programs. Punnoose is board certified in both Adult Psychiatry (since 2019) and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (since 2020), and holds medical licenses in Maryland and Washington, D.C.[5]

Political career

In 2024, Punnoose was named the AACAP Congressional Fellow, a role that positioned her at the intersection of mental health advocacy and federal policy.[6]

Building on her leadership in psychiatry and health policy, Punnoose declared her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 11th congressional district special election in 2025.
