PRNEWS.IO is a sponsored content marketplace with fixed pricing for publications providing services for creating and sharing news and stories globally.[1] They have offices located in Estonia (Tallinn) and Ukraine (Mykolayiv).[2]

In 2005, two journalists launched a platform for sending press releases so that small businesses would have the capability to implement their platform services with just a few clicks of a button. In 2014, this team launched its new project PRNEWS.io, a modern limelight to the ancient public relations[3][4] and on December 25, 2015, the company was registered as PRNEWS LLC (ТОВ "ПРНЬЮЗ") (Mykolayiv, Ukraine).[5]

By 2017, the company had collaborated with over 4,000 publications in hundreds of countries around the world. Most of the company's clients were international customers (the domestic market of Ukraine provided only 48% of sales at the time while the share of non-Russian-speaking customers reached almost 40%).[3]

On November 9, 2018, the startup received an Estonian registration under the name PRNEWS OÜ.[6]. The company was created online using digital identity issued by the Estonian government under the e-Residency of Estonia.[7]

In 2019, the Ukrainian office had a total of 38 employees and according to the online media source MC.today, the company has become #91 among respected IT employers in Ukraine.[8]

In April 2020 PRNEWS.io became a service provider of the Estonian e-Residency program[9]. Service Providers listed in the Marketplace have been curated based on careful due diligence by the e-Residency team.

In order to issue €2 million in convertible securities[10], on August 20, 2020, the firm registered units of its share capital with the Nasdaq CSD depository.[11]

At the beginning of 2021, the number of publications in the startup's catalog reached 50,000.[12]. In the first half of 2021, the company paid $1.4 million to publishers of news sites. [13]

According to the Native Advertising Institute (Copenhagen, Denmark), PRNEWS.io is the world's first sponsored content marketplace with fixed pricing for publications. The institute included the company in the Publisher's Buyers Guide to Native Advertising Technology by Chad Pollitt.[1]

Russian copywriting specialist Petr Panda believes that this service is the best option in Runet if it is necessary to distribute a press release on niche publications to the right target audience.[14] Other marketers (in particular Isaac John, Tom Pick, Stanislav Vrublevsky) have said the same. They note that the marketplace provides a convenient way for users to write, publish and distribute story materials on major news media sites. It is a simple and straightforward process to filter through publications in the catalog by parameters (category, country, cost and time of publication, audience coverage, etc.) and select the appropriate edition such as The Sunday Post, Rolling Stone, or Investing.com.[15][16][17][18]

Herman Bogapov, editor of the HiTech.Expert portal and the online version of the weekly newspaper Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, says that PRNEWS.io has many indicators and metrics built into the PRNEWS.io system and based on this, provides the client with more effective placement and longer-term campaigns. At the same time, the cost of placement is often higher than when accessing sites directly.[19] Web analyst Igor Selitsky, comparing various sites, also notes that the cost on the PRNEWS.io platform is higher.[20]

In October 2021, during an interview on the morning show Coffe+ on Estonian ETV+ , the founder of the project said that since the beginning of 2021 the PRNEWS.io website has been visited by 1.5 million people.[21]

Estimator. PRNEWS.io as an analytics tool[edit]

Many articles regarding the PRNEWS.io marketplace contain information about the analytics solution used by the company which can be used as an independent tool. [22] In particular, the Unique Viewers Estimator tool is mentioned which shows the probable number of unique readers for a future article. [23] [24] Ankit Singla classifies the Unique Viewers Estimator as one of three methods for calculating traffic to websites, including those of competitors. [25]

The marketplace catalog data is used to calculate financial metrics for the sponsored content market. In particular, to assess the cost of information campaigns and to determine the real cost of appearances in the media as opposed to the stated price list. [26] [27]

Criticism[edit]

PRNEWS has received criticism for advertising politically exposed persons. On January 4, 2020, a number of opposition media outlets in Armenia lashed out at incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for a flattering article in the Swiss newspaper Berner Zeitung.[28] Later, the information about the custom-made nature of the article was refuted.[29]

PRNEWS has been repeatedly criticized for indirectly aiding and abetting information attacks. Clients of media attacks replicate references on news resources, and the cost of such attacks can be easily calculated at prnews.io.[30]
