Ibrahim Rakson Muhammad (born 20 June 1964) is a Nigerian professor of Animal Science and the current Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru (FUAZ). He is known for his contributions to pasture agronomy, livestock nutrition, forage utilisation, and academic leadership in Nigerian agricultural research institutions.
Early life and education
Muhammad was born on 20 June 1964 in Bosso-Minna, Niger State. He began his education at LEA Primary School, Bosso, Minna (1970–1976) and proceeded to Federal Government College, Maiduguri (1977–1982). He gained admission into the University of Sokoto (now Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto) in 1982/83 for a pre-degree programme and subsequently earned a B.Sc. in Agriculture in 1988.
He completed his M.Sc. (1994) and Ph.D. (2004) in Animal Science at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. He also participated in several training programmes in proposal writing, agricultural data analysis, and participatory technology development.
Academic career
Muhammad began his academic career in 1990 as an Assistant Research Fellow at the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), ABU Zaria. There, he rose to the rank of Senior Research Fellow and served in various capacities including:
- Member, Livestock Systems Research Programme
- Project Leader, On-Farm Adaptive Research (NAPRI)
- Collaborating Scientist with ILRI, IITA, and ICRISAT
- Technical Reviewer for Agricultural Development Projects in Katsina and Zamfara States
He transferred to Bayero University Kano in 2004 and became a full Professor of Animal Science in 2009. At BUK, he served as:

In February 2025, Muhammad was appointed as the second substantive Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru and assumed office in March 2025. One of his key initiatives is the establishment of the Coordinating Office for Research, Excellence, Development, and Institutional Transformation (CREDIT), which aims to promote research governance and institutional excellence at FUAZ.
Research and publications
Prof. Muhammad has published over 217 academic works, of which more than 70% focus on forage agronomy and utilisation. His research has particularly contributed to the understanding and application of *Sorghum almum* in livestock systems.
