Background[edit]
In July of 2021, John Anthony confirmed on his website that he would be releasing yet another new album entitled Project 4:44 and would feature twelve songs. In the article online, John Anthony confirmed the album was set to release on August 6, along with the artwork. This would be his second album of 2021, as just months prior came the release of his most anticipated album Words Are Weapons on April 9. The announcement was unexpected and seemingly rushed.
In the weeks leading up to the scheduled release date, there was no marketing or promotion for the album. Two weeks after the announcement of the album, the headline article on John Anthony's website was taken down, along with Villainous Records removing all social media posts on Facebook and Twitter. On July 17, Villainous Records confirmed on Twitter that Project 4:44 was to be delayed until October 2021. The album did not release to streaming stores on August 6 and was instead replaced by a new single entitled "Beautiful". This song was reportedly one of the songs that was featured on Project 4:44. The song was originally going to be entitled "Temptations" but was later changed to "Beautiful".
On October 29, John Anthony released a new single called "My Life", which seemingly ended any belief about Project 4:44 releasing. On November 29, John Anthony tweeted "Sorry no P44, but enjoy Villainology vol 3", thus announcing that the album has been scrapped. John Anthony later explained he "felt rushed" to release a new project due to some criticism he was receiving from he previously released album Words Are Weapons but ultimately decided to not release Project 4:44 due to the high numbers and sales Words Are Weapons was bringing in. "It would have been another Unexplored situation again..." he explained on the Hip-Hop Radar Underground interview. On August 7, John Anthony released his unexpected fourth album Unexplored just one month after his highly anticipated album The Bad Guy Chronicles released, causing many fans to fell like John Anthony rushed the project. Similarly, Project 4:44 looked like it was heading down that same path before being scrapped.
On June 19, 2022, John Anthony posted on his Instagram story a document stating the previous release of Project 4:44 on August 6, 2021, confirming the album was indeed going to be released. The document also showed the albums track list, featuring several new songs. One of the songs, entitled "Temptations", was the song "Beautiful" that was released on August 6, 2021. Another song listed was "Defiant", which ended up being a track used on Success Story, the seventh studio album by John Anthony released on March 23, 2023.
When asked if Project 4:44 would ever be released, John Anthony stated: "Never say never..." on Hip Hop Radar Underground interview.
