Proper Coffee is an American coffee company based in Evansville, Indiana. It is owned and operated by the Hayden family and has multiple locations across the Evansville metropolitan area. It was founded in Evansville, Indiana as Barber Bistro Coffee in 2015 by former singer Noah Hayden.

Proper was founded to introduce "the third wave of coffee" to Evansville after Folgers and Starbucks Coffee expanded to Evansville. It followed a trend of barber-coffee shops commonly sighted on the California coast. Proper is currently expanding to a third location in downtown Evansville.[1] Proper serves both hot and cold drinks to customers. As well as serving from its individual shops, the Comfort Inn also sells PC beverages.

History[edit]

Founding[edit]

The idea for founding a local, family-owned coffee originated in the mid-2010s while Noah Hayden was touring with Christian rock band Mission Six. Hayden would always search up coffee franchises present in each city. Hayden began to notice a large difference in quality between the local shops and the nation-wide franchises. Hayden began developing an obsession with coffee beans. He began experimenting with different types of beans to learn, develop, and master new methods of brewing. In 2015, Hayden founded Barber Bistro Coffee in the lobby of Roger's Academy of Hair Design.[2]

Expansion[edit]

In 2017, Proper Coffee expanded into the food court of Eastland Mall replaced a Japanese food stand that had been out of business for several years. When former professional soccer player Josh Tudela founded the Comfort Inn in downtown Evansville, the restaurant adopted PC beverages to sell from their second-floor coffee shop. In 2018, the company prepared for expansion into McCurdy Retail, establishing a third location as well as official expanding into urban Evansville.[3]

Products[edit]

Beverages[edit]

Since its establishment, Proper has sold different types of hot and cold coffees, including espresso, lattes, cortados, cappuccinos. Chai tea has also become a popular sale. Proper coffees made at Rogers and shipped to other locations. However, coffees are fresh-pressed onsite. Proper has also introduced the sale of bottled beverages. Bottled juice, tea, water, soft drinks, and cold brew.[4]

Foods[edit]

As of 2017, Proper introduced a number of foods to their location in Eastland Mall. Such foods included artisan cronuts, gourmet cookies, macaroons, muffins, grab-and-go salads, soups, and sandwiches.[5]

Controversies[edit]

In 2015, Proper had Macintosh computers installed. They were removed in 2016 when a minor theft was committed. Hayden was also forced to re-name Barber Bistro due to copyright naming.[6]
