Protegent Antivirus is a suspected rogue antivirus and PUP that runs on Microsoft Windows. Protegent's status as malicious software is unclear as there is a lack of evidence, it detects both malware (such as MEMZ and 000.exe as shown here) and safe programs, though they may be accidental false positives.
The quote, "The word "Protegent" is derived from a French word "Protégee", which means "To Protect"." appears on their website
It has become an internet meme due to the poor quality of its advertisements, which was primarily popularized by the popular YouTuber and Twitch streamer Vinesauce Joel's "Windows Vista Destruction" video. Its mascot is a slightly altered orange version of Whyatt Beanstalk, the main character of the children's television show Super Why!. Protegent is also known for its very bad grammar.
It also has fake reviews claiming to be from users in English-speaking countries, despite the reviews being written in poor English, and claims to be able to protect from the infamous ransomware WannaCry which was proven false by the malware YouTuber Siam Alam.
