Psychonaut 4 is an Georgian black metal band formed in Tbilisi in 2010. A psychonaut is a person who explores their own psyche with the use of drugs. Alcoholism and drug abuse is a common theme in their music, as well as depression and suicide. Their first demo, titled "40%" was named after the percentage of alcohol in vodka, and the ¨4¨ in the name refers to the 4 plateaus in the drug dextromethorphan. They are often considered one of the pioneers of the depressive black metal subgenre. [1] They are known for the unique vocals of frontman Graf Von Baphomet, which alternate between wailing and high-pitched screeching, their use of melodic riffs unusual for black metal, and instrumental virtuosity. Their music combines elements of black metal, post-punk, gothic rock, shoegaze, and traditional rock music. They have cited the bands Lifelover, Shining, Lacrimosa, Agatha Christie, and Antimatter as influences to their sound. [2] Graf has also named Hurts, The Sisters Of Mercy, Dead Can Dance, and Massive Attack as some of his favorite bands. [3] The band describes their music as therapeutic, and have referred to their fans as "patients" in interviews. [4]
