Marcus Bromander[1][2], commonly known by his username Puffballs United, (born September 9th, 1990) is a British artist, animator, programmer, video game developer, and voice actor best known for creating the popular Newgrounds/Stickpage Flash online game series Henry Stickmin series. He is the co-founder of InnerSloth, the development studio responsible for Dig2China, the hit murder mystery game Among Us, and The Henry Stickmin Collection. He is based in Redmond, Washington.
He also works with Forest Willard and Amy Liu.
Career
Henry Stickmin (2007-2015)
The zeroth and prototype game for the series was the first game, Crossing the Pit, a game published by PuffballsUnited in 2007. It featured a simple stick character trying to cross a pit and all options result in a failure (falling into the pit).
In 2008, PuffballsUnited released Breaking the Bank, a relatively short game that carried over Pit’s gameplay style. The titular character Henry Stickmin was also introduced. Unlike in Pit, Breaking the Bank contained an option that resulted in progression of the story towards a canonical ending.
The sequel to Bank, entitled Escaping the Prison, was released in 2010. Prison expanded on Bank’s scope, with three endings and 18 unique fails. A follow-up, Stealing the Diamond, was released in 2011. Diamond would make failures a centerpiece in the series, with significantly increased references to popular culture compared to the previous two installments, while also featuring significantly longer pathways with multiple ways to fail. The game was originally going to be the last game of the franchise, but since people wanted more, Puff decided to make three more.
Infiltrating the Airship was released in 2013. The Government and Toppat Clan were introduced to the series, marking the first time Henry could side with one faction or remain neutral, as shown in the four endings. A handful of staple characters were introduced in Airship, which include Charles Calvin, Reginald Copperbottom, and the Right Hand Man. Fleeing the Complex, released in 2015, had the series return to a jailbreak adventure, albeit a more expanded adventure compared to Prison with its 5 endings and 60 unique fails. Ellie Rose and Dmitri Johannes Petrov mark their first appearances in the series; Ellie would go on to become the tritagonist of the Stickmin series, playing a substantial role in the series as Henry's partner-in-crime. The faction element introduced in Airship permeated into Complex, with two endings catered specifically towards their allegiances.
InnerSloth
Sometime after the release of Complex, PuffballsUnited co-founded the development studio InnerSloth with programmer ForteBass, which would develop and publish The Henry Stickmin Collection.[3]
Remastered Henry Stickmin games
Released in 2020, The Henry Stickmin Collection contains a remake of Bank & remastered editions of Prison, Diamond, Airship & Complex, featuring updated graphics & sound design.[4] Alongside the re-releases was the final instalment in the series-- a brand new episode entitled Completing the Mission, which puts the opposing factions in a head-on conflict, and contains 16 different endings and 164 unique fails.[5] With the Henry Stickmin series coming to a definitive close, PuffballsUnited had announced that he would be starting work on Among Us 2 for InnerSloth, having intended to move on from the series and onto bigger projects.
Among Us
In 2017, a video game called Among Us was developed by Bromander and his partner Forest Willard.[6] It is a 2018 online multiplayer social deduction game developed and published by American game studio Innersloth. It was released on iOS and Android devices in June 2018 and on Windows in November 2018, featuring cross-platform play between these platforms. The game was also ported for the Nintendo Switch in December 2020, and has planned releases for the Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2021. Among Us is described as one of Bromander’s most "popular" video games in InnerSloth. The art was done by Bromander and Amy Liu.
A sequel was announced to be in development but was cancelled soon after to work on improving Among Us.[7] On December 10, at the 2020 Game Awards, it was announced that a new map based off of the Airship from the Henry Stickmin series would be coming to Among Us in early 2021. It was soon announced to be The Airship map.
Personal life
Bromander is British.
In 2007, Bromander created his own YouTube account simply called Puffballs United. The channel would have videos of him editing, animating some of his upcoming games, and doing live streams. On January 8, 2021, Bromander created a two-part live stream called "The Henry Stickmin Collection Developer Commentary" in which Bromander would play The Henry Stickmin Collection while his fans ask him some questions and he would show them some easter eggs, references, and secrets in the game for people who haven't played yet.[8]
