Pujitha Basnayake was born on 02 May 1966 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Her father Kiribanda Basnayake was a former Airplane Engineer and her mother Podi Menike Rathnayake is a Housewife. He has four brothers & three sisters.
Pujitha attended St. Thomas' College, Kotte & Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte, where he excelled in Athletes, representing the school.

In 1991 Pujitha married Jayamini Chandrasiri, with whom she had two sons, in 1996 and 1999.
