University Library of Pula (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist., acronym SKPU), general scientific library of regional importance, established in 1949 in Pula, Croatia. It collects publications and provides information essential for scientific, educational, and professional work at the University of Pula, and also gathers and processes library materials related to Istria. It is the largest library in the Croatian part of Istria and holds the most extensive collection.
History
The library was founded on 21 December 1949 under the name Scientific Library of Pula (Naučna biblioteka u Puli). It inherited the collection of the City Library of the City People's Committee of Pula (Biblioteca Cittadina del Comitato Popolare Cittadino di Pola), which, since 1947, had been the name for the former Provincial Library of Istria (Biblioteca Provinciale dell'Istria), established in 1930 in Pula through the merger of three major libraries: the library of the former Provincial Committee (Biblioteca Provinciale dell'Istria, founded in 1861 in Poreč and relocated to Pula in 1922), the Municipal Library of Pula (Biblioteca Comunale, 1903), and the library of the Istrian Society for Archaeology and Homeland History (Società Istriana di Archeologia e Storia Patria, founded in 1884 in Poreč). From 1932, the Provincial Library of Istria received legal deposit copies of publications from the region. By 1937, it held 41,096 volumes—mostly in Italian, with a smaller portion in German, and only around ten books in Croatian. It had a general scientific character, with a particular focus on collecting works in the historical sciences, especially those concerning the history of Istria. Between 1943 and 1947, part of its collection was taken to Italy. This was compensated in 1961, when the Italian government provided funds for the purchase of books in Italy. In 1945, it became the city's lending library.
The first professionally trained librarians who established the scientific work of the Scientific Library of Pula were temporarily seconded from the University Library of Zagreb. Due to a significant shortage of books in Croatian, the systematic acquisition of old Croatian books began in the 1950s. From 1951, the library received legal deposit copies of printed materials from across Croatia, and in 1958, it was granted the statutory right to receive such copies. Around that time, it was also allocated approximately 12,000 volumes from the libraries of former Italian-language and German-language secondary schools, as well as collections from nationalised and confiscated institutions in Istria following the Second World War—for example, the old library of the former Benedictine monastery in Dajla near Novigrad, which held around 4,000 volumes, most of which were returned to church authorities after Croatia's independence.
In 1961, ownership and founding rights were transferred from the People's Republic of Croatia to the Municipality of Pula. In 1979, the library was incorporated into the University of Rijeka, which became its owner and founder in 1994. In 1995, it was renamed the University Library of Pula. Until 2006, it served as the central library for the higher education institutions of the University of Rijeka operating in Pula, and since then, it has functioned as a constituent part of the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula.
