Pumpkin Pet Insurance officially known as Pumpkin or Pumpkin Insurance Services Inc. is a pet health company and pet insurance provider.[1] It is located in New York, NY. Pumpkin Pet Insurance plans are underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

History[edit]

Pumpkin was an incubation project initiated by global animal health company, Zoetis,[2] and was launched in 2020[3] in collaboration with Alexandre Douzet, current CEO of Pumpkin and previous co-founder and CEO of Ollie – the human-grade pet food brand.[4][5]

Zoetis launched Pumpkin after noticing the average cost of veterinary services was increasing at a rate of about 6% per year (about three times the increase compared to the standard inflation in the U.S. at the time).[6] At the time, 61% of Americans did not have enough savings to cover a $1k pet emergency[7], yet only 2% of US pets were insured.[8][2]

In 2020, Pumpkin created the 'Arf Meow For Vets' campaign as a platform for pet owners to say thank you to their veterinary hospitals providing care during the COVID-19 crisis.[9]

In January 2021, Pumpkin and The Delaware Humane Association (DHA) hosted the "indoguration" of Major Biden™️ to celebrate the first rescue dog in the White House and raise funds for the DHA.[10] The virtual fundraising event was hosted by Jill Martin of NBC’s Today show and featured a musical performance from Josh Groban.[11][12][13] The event raised more than $200,000 for DHA.[14]

In 2023, Pumpkin partnered with PetMed Express, an online pet pharmacy.[15]

Pumpkin is recognized by the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA), of which they are a member.[16]
