Purdah is an independent documentary film directed by Jeremy Guy, starring Kaikasha Mirza, Saba Mirza, and Al Heena Mirza. The title, Purdah, refers to a veil or screen and can also refer to something that Muslim women wear to keep hidden. The documentary is filmed in a cinéma vérité style.[1] Purdah had its World Premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival in March of 2018.[2]

The film screened at several Film Festivals which include Dances With Films, Indian Film Festival Stuttgart, Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Chicago South Asian Film Festival, Indian Film Festival of Houston, Fünf Seen Filmfestival, South Asian Film Festival of Montreal, River to River Florence Indian Film Festival, Indian Film Festival Münster, Imagine India International Film Festival, Big Syn International Film Festival London, and other festivals worldwide.

Purdah is widely distributed internationally by Indie Rights on Video on Demand platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and iTunes, and via educational distributor Collective Eye Films to universities and libraries. [3] [4]

The soundtrack for Purdah was released on February 22nd, 2019. [5]

Plot

Purdah is the story of a young Indian Muslim woman who trades her burka for dreams of playing on the Mumbai Senior Women's Cricket Team and how the harsh realities for women in her country creates an unexpected outcome for her own family, ultimately shattering and fueling aspirations.

Reception

Purdah had its film festival run in 2018 and 2019. After its World Premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival, Purdah had its Los Angeles Premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as part of Dances With Films.[6] The film subsequently played in international festivals, including its International Premiere at the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart in Germany. Purdah won awards at Dances With Films and The Big Syn International Film Festival London for excellence in the documentary category and for the crafting of the the film's trailer, poster, marketing, and the overall quality of the film.

KQED-FM, an NPR-member radio station in San Francisco, called Purdah, "A real-life Bend It Like Beckham."[7]

Purdah was named one of the Best Independent Films of 2019 by Rotten Tomatoes TomatoMeter critic, Marie Asner of Phantom Tollbooth.[8]

The film was screened at the 2019 Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference to be used as an educational tool.[9] The academic conference gathers university professors and students to discuss issues, literature, film, and art within the field of Asian Studies.

Purdah currently holds a 100% critic approval rating from nationally known critics on the online review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.[10]
