Purnell S.A. is a Swiss luxury watch company based in Geneva, Switzerland, and founded in March 2020[1]. The brand specializes in haute horlogerie watches housing exclusively tourbillon movements.[2]
Introduction
Maurizio Mazzocchi, who previously held executive positions at brands such as Omega, Blancpain, Gucci Group, Roger Dubuis and Jacob & Co., became CEO of Purnell in March 2020.[1][3][4]
During the digital edition of Watches and Wonders Geneva in 2020, Purnell presented the Escape II Collection and its Double Spherion movement, the Caliber 03[5]. The Double Spherion is the world’s fastest double triple-axis tourbillon, created by watchmaker Eric Coudray.[6][2] Each cage of the Spherion rotates at different speeds: the inner cage makes a full rotation in 8 seconds, the median cage in 16 seconds and the outer cage in 30 seconds.[3][1][7]
Movement Development
Eric Coudray has worked on complicated tourbillons, having created pieces for watch brands such as Jaeger-LeCoultre and MB&F.[8] In 2012 he won the Prix Gaïa for “Artisanat-creation”.[9]
Coudray created the basis for Purnell’s first caliber, the “Spherion”: a triple-axis tourbillon that the brand claims is the world’s fastest triple-axis tourbillon. He based the Spherion on an escapement design originally developed by American watchmaker Albert H. Potter in the 19th century.[10][1][3]Coudray also developed the Double Spherion movement, which features two “Spherions” rotating in opposite directions due to a differential system developed by Coudray.[6][11]
In April 2021 during the second digital edition of Watches and Wonders (formerly Salon Internationale de Haute Horlogerie),[12] Purnell presented the Escape Primo WPM, which featured the new Caliber 11 with a single Spherion instead of two[13]. The Escape Primo WPM unveiled the new material composite, White Purnell Microfiber (or WPM), exclusive to the brand and developed in Switzerland.[13]
During Watches and Wonders 2021 Purnell also unveiled the Escape II Absolute Sapphire, its first watch with case and movement bridges made entirely of sapphire crystal sourced and polished in Switzerland.[14][2][11][7][15]
