Virginiah Sherice Vassell (born October 8, 2002) known professionally by her stage name Queen Gena, is a Jamaican-American rapper, songwriter, actress and media personality.[1], born in Wandsworth, London, United Kingdom [2] and raised in Jamaica. She began her career in 2019 when she released her first remix called "Running Up Freestyle" [3] originally by Megan Thee Stallion. She is known for her freestyle rap and remixes with a unique flow and rhyme scheme when it comes to rapping[4].
Queen Gena started rapping and writing music around age 12 [5] she explains multiple times on her Instagram live that rapping is not just a career for her, it’s her passion, something she loves and enjoys doing. Her dad was absent throughout her whole life and she was raised by her mother and grandparents.
Early Life
Queen Gena’s family moved to Jamaica when she was about 3 months old where she spent most of her life. She later moved to the United States during her youth. She went to Huntsville High School and majored in English prior to pursuing her rapping career[6]. During this time she worked at McDonald's as a cashier while building her rap career during her free time[7].
Career
Queen Gena rose to fame after remixing “Running Up Freestyle”[8] by Megan Thee Stallion. She later released “Beast Mode” [9] as her second single, which was a hardcore trap type of beat[10].
As an independent artist she mentioned it wasn't easy and she encourages other upcoming musicians to never give up on their dreams because it will all make sense in the end[11].
She also mentioned some of her biggest inspirations in the music industry are artists such as Nicki Minaj, Kash Doll, Dax, Eminem, Hospin, Joyner Lucas, Tech N9ne, Jadakiss and many more that she looks up to.
Personal Life
Queen Gena was raised by her mother and grandmother without a father[12]. She lost her uncle (Steve) due to a bike accident in 2009 when he collided into a tractor with a fatal blow to the skull and died days after; he was a father figure to her. She has three nationalities: born in England, raised in Jamaica and the United States[13].
