Quetzal is a French progressive rock band from Saint-Affrique, in the Aveyron department. Founded in 2013 by guitarist Christian Laur and drummer Denis Louvel, the band released its self-titled debut studio album in 2024 through Musea Parallèle.[1] Initially instrumental, Quetzal added vocalist Thierry Lenoble to its line-up in 2026.[2]
History
Formation and early work
Quetzal was formed in Aveyron in 2013 by Christian Laur and Denis Louvel. In its early years, the group developed instrumental material within the progressive rock genre.[1]
Quetzal
The band's debut studio album, Quetzal, was released on 25 April 2024 by Musea Parallèle. The 38-minute, 52-second album contains seven tracks: "Amazona", "Quiscale", "Genèse", "Pithui", "Colombinae", "Harpie" and "Paruline".[3]
Reviews published by Prog Rock Journal, Background Magazine, and ProgCensor characterized the record as instrumental progressive rock, noting its guitars, keyboards, rhythm section, Hammond organ, Mellotron, and analogue synthesizers.[4][5][6]
2026 line-up and live activity
In 2026, singer Thierry Lenoble joined Quetzal. The group subsequently released a vocal version of "Colombinae", a track from its debut album.[2]
On 27 June 2026, Quetzal performed at La Maurelle near Saint-Affrique. A RockMeeting concert report described a line-up featuring Christian Laur on guitars and Taurus pedals, Denis Louvel on drums, Daniel Borrego on bass, Arno Richard on keyboards and Mellotron, and Thierry Lenoble on vocals.[7]
Musical style
Quetzal has been described as an instrumental progressive rock band. Reviews of its debut album have highlighted the interaction of electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, and rhythm section, as well as arrangements that combine symphonic elements, heavier passages, and textures associated with progressive rock of the 1970s and 1990s.[4][5]
The release of the vocal version of "Colombinae" followed Lenoble's arrival and introduced vocals into the band's repertoire.[2]
