Quinn Nystrom is an American politician, author, and healthcare advocate running for Congress in Minnesota's 8th congressional district during the 2020 election. She is a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party.
Nystrom's platform is informed by her personal experience with Type 1 diabetes and career-long advocacy on the matter. Her platform emphasizes expanded access to healthcare and prescription medication as well as increased investment in medical research. [1]
Early life[edit]
Nystrom is a 4th generation resident of Crow Wing County.[2]
Her younger brother was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1996, while she herself was diagnosed with the disease three years later at the age of 13. In her early teens, she became dedicated to the cause of finding a cure for juvenile diabetes and advocating for those affected by the disease. As an advocate, she was granted an audience with former President George W. Bush, Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, and Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton.[3]
Political career[edit]
Nystrom served for four years on the City Council of Baxter, Minnesota. Elected in 2015 at 28 years old, she was both the youngest-ever member of the council and the only female member during the term she served.[4]
Nystrom was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 10A of the Minnesota House of Representatives. She won 40.60% of the vote and lost to Josh Heintzeman.[5]
