Rémy Yulzari is a double bass player, composer and educator. He graduated in New-York from the Juilliard School and in Paris from the CNSM (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris) and has enjoyed a prolific career as both a soloist performing with musicians around the world and a recording artist.

Yulzari is known for his innovative use of the double bass as a soloist, and his explorations of the sounds it can produce. His compositions and arrangements cross over different genres: the refinement of classical music, the energy of world music and the spontaneity of improvisation.

In addition to playing his own arrangements of the standard classical Chamber music repertoire, he has played a wide variety of folk world music such as, but not only, Klezmer, Tango, Gypsy-jazz, Latin music and French melodies.[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Rémy first joined the National Music School in accordion, violin, piano, composition and musical analysis. He finished the nine-year curriculum in four years. At age 18, he continued violin studies at Ecole Nationale de Musique in Villeurbanne, and simultaneously began studying the double bass at the Lyon Conservatoire National de Région.

Yulzari then chose to focus on the double bass. He was awarded a “Premier Prix” in double bass from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.[2]

On double bass, he has worked with Eugene Levinson, Bernard Cazauran, Thomas Martin, Bozo Paradzik and Tony Araque. He has also studied orchestration with Guillaume Connesson, composition with Alain Weber and conducting with Nicolas Brochot.

Mr. Yulzari is the first ever double bassist to be invited to join The Juilliard School’s Artist Diploma program.[3] Two international soloists only are admitted to the program every year. "The Artist Diploma in Music Performance is a two-year program for the few highly gifted and experienced performers at the post-master’s level [...] who possess the ability and determination to realize their talent in the contemporary world". [4]

Rémy also earned a Master of Education (Certificat d’Aptitude) from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon.

Playing style[edit]

Double bassist and composer Rémy Yulzari is reinventing the role of the double bass in solo and collaborative settings, and his explorations of the sounds it can produce. His compositions and arrangements cross over a wide range of musical styles: the subtlety of classical music, the groove of world music and the spontaneity of improvisation.

In addition to playing his own arrangements of the standard classical Chamber music repertoire, he has played a wide variety of folk world music such as, but not only, KlezmerTangoGypsy-jazzLatin music and French melodies.[1]

Yulzari uses the double-bass to recreate the human voice, or other instruments such as the oud, the shakuachi, or percussions.[10] He also frequently performs on the accordion, melodica and piano.

Notable in Yulzari's style is the sense of humour displayed both in his music and when addressing the audience in his performances.

The bowed lines of the double-bass sigh like a human voice, yearning. The textures and timbres that come out of the instruments are as rich and full as those of a much larger ensemble. It is, quite simply, an enchantingly beautiful sound.” - George Robinson, for the Jewish Week (October 2014)[10]

[Yulzari} played superbly (...) what I heard impressed me a great deal. The programming was also excellent - a hard thing to do for the solo bass.” - John Corigliano (February 2013)

Mr. Yulzari, thank you for the very musical evening.” - Ron Carter (January 2013)

"Trillo closed the concert with (...) two imaginative, painterly scores by its bassist, Remy Yulzari" - Allan Kozinn, for the New York Times (August 2012)[11]

Everything played has such a distinctively intimate flavor, all highly evocative in mood and color (...). You are a model of what the creative performer should be all about.” - Robert McDonald (December 2012)

Mr Rémy Yulzari is a serious and talented double bassist, always purchasing higher musical goals as composer, musical researches and new musics.” - Thierry Barbé (November 2010)

In my career as a musician and educator, I have found that very rarely does a musician come along who possesses the musical and technical skills (and more importantly, the maturity and ambition) to become a leader in the field. I believe Rémy is one of those individuals. Rémy [displays] immense talent, a natural musicianship, and an unwavering enthusiasm for the double bass. - Eugene Levinson (July 2010)

(...) I was impressed about his musical and instrumental skills as well as his sense of organization; He found a string quintet, which he managed, with which he won several international competitions and perform in many concerts he found in France and abroad. Rémy is in permanent research of original repertoire. Thanks to him I discovered many unknown and very interesting chamber music pieces which I was also happy to play with him.” - Daria Hovora (February 2010)'.

Instrument[edit]

Mr. Yulzari plays a custom designed "B21" double bass made by French luthier Patrick Charton. Patrick Charton was twice awarded the bronze medal at the Cremona Triennale lutherie competition for his double bass [2].

Notable compositions[edit]

Rémy’s compositions and arrangements have been described by The New York Times as “imaginative” and “painterly” and are now published by Editions Combre. [11]

His composition Errance, for double bass and piano was the required competition performance piece in the French double bass competition “Bass'2008.[12]

In 2016, he was commissioned Composer in Residence for the Rencontres Musicales Internationales des Graves, where his piece Hommage à A. Ginastera for flute, harp, violin, guitar and doublebass was created.[13]
