r/popheads, also known simply as Popheads, is a subreddit where participants discuss new releases in pop music and relevant news about popular artists. It has notably hosted many 'AmA' threads for artists popular among popheads members including Carly Rae Jepsen, Kesha, and Grimes.[1]

An official r/popheads podcast, titled 'Main Pod Girl' is hosted by artists AJ Marks and Sola.[2]

Overview[edit]

The subreddit, which describes itself as "the latest and greatest in pop music, all in one subreddit", is known for its discussions about news and leaks within the music industry, with a focus on the mainstream pop genre. Songs and music videos can only be posted if they are "FRESH", meaning they must have been officially released within the past 30 days. Popular female artists are referred to as 'main pop girls' by r/popheads members, due to their ability to perform high on mainstream charts.

r/popheads has invited many notable artists to host AMA or 'Ask Me Anything' threads to promote new releases. AMAs allow Reddit users to leave questions and comments for artists to interact with and respond to, similar to a fan Q&A.

On May 1, 2020, r/popheads hosted Club Bop, a virtual zoom party which raised funds for Direct Relief's COVID-19 relief efforts. The event included live DJ sets from artists including Allie X, HANA, Hannah Diamond, Magdalena Bay, That Kid, and Planet 1999.[3]

The Popheads Charts[edit]

r/popheads run their own weekly music chart, tracking the Top 50 most listened to songs among popheads members who have signed up to the chart. The charts are calculated by checking how frequently each song appears in the top 10 songs/albums of a user's last.fm account, with the Top 50 results then placed into a Spotify playlist.[4] There is also a monthly chart which tracks the Top 25 albums of that month.
