RELAX is an artists collective founded by the artists Marie-Antoinette Chiarenza and Daniel Hauser, Initially starting their collaborative work in Paris, France, they are based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Life and work[edit]

Marie-Antoinette Chiarenza (born 1957 in Tunis, Tunisia) and Daniel Hauser (born 1959 in Bern, Switzerland) are working as a collective since 1983. The ''& co'' in their name refers to all kind of cooperations with people.[1] People are sometimes involved in the artworks, other times they are just involved in the process, depending on the context of places and themes. The group became known with statements such as thinking alone is criminal[2] (1991), artists are no flags (1993), I am a woman, why are you not ? (1995), getting paid for doing nothing (2007 - 2009) or you pay but you don‘t agree with the price (1994-2013).

From 1985 to 2002 Chiarenza & Hauser, collectively known as RELAX, are based in Biel-Bienne, and since 2003 in Zurich. For their research and projects they undertake numerous scholarships and work stays, mainly in Western and Eastern Europe, North and Latin America. Their exhibition activities include personal and group shows at Swiss and international art institutions.

Since the beginning of their collaboration, Chiarenza & Hauser became oriented towards practicing an art that is based on contextualization, deconstruction, intervention and infiltration. Their projects are mostly site- or context-related. An often inclusive artistic practice, which requires a political approach, is dedicated to concerns that they have usually been pursuing for years. These include feminist concerns and the examination of critical masculinity in connection with the male gaze and social hierarchies, with questions of access and belonging in the social context. The examination of economic issues in the context of the capitalist logic of the exhaustion of all resources is also part of this. The topics range from care economy and poorly or unpaid work to debt and the decolonization of all bodies, institutions and the public sphere.

Their artistic practice is playful and often makes the infectious energy of a humorous situation its own. Dealing with the physical dimension of the materials they use for this purpose in their projects is an important basis for them. A wide variety of media are hereby used, such as installation, objects, video, sound, photography, language and text up to performances.

Marie-Antoinette Chiarenza is teaching at the HEAD – Geneva University of Art and Design. Daniel Hauser is teacher and head of art studies at the F+F Schule für Kunst und Design Zurich.
