Raúl Araya Stiglich (13 September 1901 – 1989) was a Chilean politician who served as a minister.[1]
He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army from 17 March 1955 to 8 May 1956, and later as intendant of Colchagua Province during the government of President Eduardo Frei Montalva, from 1964 to 1966.[1]
Early life and family
Araya was born in Quillota, Valparaíso Province, on 13 September 1901. He was the son of Felipe Araya Flores and Ernestina Stiglich Vera, and attended the Colegio de los Sagrados Corazones de Valparaíso.[2]
Araya married twice. His first marriage was to Aura Ester Santelices Mellafe on 31 March 1928 in Los Andes, with whom he had one daughter. On 23 June 1939, he married Sara Elena Urcullu Galecio in Santiago, with whom he had three children.[2]
Military career
In 1918, Araya entered the Military Academy as a cadet, graduating with the rank of infantry lieutenant. During the early years of his career, he served with the 14th Infantry Regiment Caupolicán, followed by the 12th Regiment Pudeto, and, from 1927, the 2nd Battalion Canto. After attaining the rank of captain, he spent three years at the Chilean Army War Academy, where he qualified as a staff officer. In 1936, he was transferred to the Military Academy. He later served with the 2nd Andean Detachment Guardia Vieja with the rank of major, becoming its executive officer and chief of staff.[2]
After his promotion to lieutenant colonel, Araya assumed command of the 13th Infantry Regiment Andalién. In 1946, he was sent to the United States on an official assignment to study at the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Upon returning to Chile, he assumed command of the 19th Infantry Regiment Colchagua.[2]
General officer
Araya was promoted to brigadier general in 1953 and became director of Military Engineering. The following year, he was promoted to major general and appointed director of Army Personnel.[2]
On 17 March 1955, Araya became Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army. During his tenure, in May of that year, he also served as acting Minister of National Defense under President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo.[2]
Araya retired from the Army on 8 May 1956, after 38 years of service. On 15 October 1981, he was granted the honorary rank of captain general.[2]
Later activities
Araya held several institutional and public positions. He served as a board member of the Army Retirement and Pension Fund in 1952 and of the Caja de Previsión de la Defensa Nacional in 1955. From 1964 to 1966, he served as intendant of Colchagua Province during the government of President Eduardo Frei Montalva. He was also a member of the Military Club and the Circle of Retired Generals and Admirals.[2]
