Raffaello Degruttola (born 15 August 1972) is an English Italian actor, writer, and director based in London[2] and whose film credits include The Hustle, Rush, Saving Private Ryan and Quantum of Solace. In 2010 Degruttola wrote and directed his first 30-minute drama The Other Side of My Sleep and, following the film's opening the Boston Film Festival, he went on to shoot his first feature film in 2014, which was nominated for the Raindance Award at the British Independent Film Awards.[3]

Early life[edit]

Raffaello Degruttola was born in 1972 in the Barnet, North London, England. His parents, Francesco Degruttola and Lina Lipizzi, had immigrated to London two years earlier from Ariano, Italy. Degruttola's formal training in the performing arts began when he attended London's Sylvia Young Theatre School from age 13 to age 16. He then continued his studies in acting at the The Lee Strasbourg Theater Institute in London.[4]

Career[edit]

In 1989, Degruttola, now 17, was cast in his first professional role in a British crime soap opera The Bill. After moving to New York, Degruttola returned to London at 23 to pursue a career in acting for theatre and television, where he went by the stage name Raph Taylor from 1996 to 2000.[5]

In 2010, Degruttola released his first short film, The Other Side of My Sleep, a 30-minute drama inspired by the recent death of his father and the loss of his grandmother. The film opened at the Eighth Boston International Film Festival as part of the Official Selection. A year later, Degruttola incorporated Contro Vento Films as an independent film production house based in London.[6] Degruttola used his production house to write, direct and produce films such as Flim: The Movie (2014), No Way Home (2017) [7], and Transference: A Bipolar Love Story (2020).[8]. Transference was selected for the Arizona[9] and Buenos Aires International Film Festivals and received the Jury Award at SRFF in New York.[10]

Personal life[edit]

Degruttola married Scottish actress and producer Simone Lahbib in 2003. [11] Their daughter, Skye Lucia Degruttola, was born in 2005 and the couple separated in 2020.
