Raiden Shogun (Chinese: 雷电将军; pinyin: Léidiàn Jiāngjūn; Japanese: 雷電将軍; Hepburn: Raiden Shōgun), also known as Raiden Ei (Chinese: 雷电影; pinyin: Léidiàn Yǐng; Japanese: 雷電影; Hepburn: Raiden Ei), is a fictional character in the video game Genshin Impact made by miHoYo. She is the ruler of the fictional nation Inazuma and is also known as Baal, one of the seven Archons. Her English voice actress is Anne Yatco.
Initially a non-player character, Raiden Shogun appears in the Archon quests of Inazuma and plays an important role. Her character design is based on Raijin in Japanese mythology and the Shogun, a title for ancient Japanese military leaders, while the kimono inspired her clothing design. Raiden Shogun became a playable character in version 2.1 "Floating World Under the Moonlight" of the game. She attracted attention and commentaries from several game medias.
Character design and creation[edit]
Promotion[edit]
Raiden Shogun appears first in a special program for version 2.0 of the game on July 9, 2021. She is described as the central character in the Inazuma chapter of the story, which will focus on the conflict between her and the traveller.[3] She subsequently appeared as a non-player character in version 2.0 of the game, titled "The Immovable God and the Eternal Euthymia".[4] On July 22, shortly after the release of version 2.0, miHoYo released the illustrations of Raiden Shogun, Kujou Sara, and Sangonomiya Kokomi, stating that they will become playalbe in version 2.1 of the game.[4][5] In the August 20 special program for version 2.1, the creators stated that Raiden Shogun's story quest "Imperatrix Umbrosa" will appear in the new version.[6] The quest unlocks after the player completes chapter II act III of the archon quest.[7]. Along with the quest, her special weapon Engulfing Lightning was also added.[8] On August 26, miHoYo released her character teaser. The video explores the reasons she became a heartless ruler through fragmented depictions of her past: the Shogun's friends have all departed her, and these unhappy episodes have led to her pursuit of eternity.[9][10]
On February 4, 2022, miHoYo hosted the special program for version 2.5, in which the Shogun was said to assume a new form and become the player's foe in the next update. The program's host did not reveal further details so that players could explore the story in-game.[11] The second act of the Shogun's story quest will also appear in version 2.5[12]. On March 11, miHoYo released emojis for Yae Miko and Raiden Shogun on their player forum HoYoLAB.[13]
Character design[edit]
Raiden Shogun is the character on which the creators have spent the most time and made the most modifications.[14] In the story, she is one of the seven Archons like Venti and Zhongli. An oppressive ruler, she serves as the main antagonist in the Inazuma chapter of the story. Her Vision Hunt Decree confiscates Visions in her realm, while the Sakoku Decree cuts off Inazuma from the rest of the world and engulfs Inazuma with perpetual lightning.[15] To establish her image of a powerful Archon, the creators designed two fights between the traveller and the Shogun, both of which forbids the player from using any skills after a period, creating a sense of domination and despair.[14] Besides her cold and commanding side in the game, Raiden Shogun cannot cook, a fact she confesses in her in-game voice line.[16]
Her design was inspired by Japanese culture. Raijin, Japan's god of lightning, serves as her archetype.[17] The name Raiden Shogun is derived from Sei-i Taishōgun.[18] Inazuma's Vision Hunt Decree originates from Japan's sword hunt[19]. Her clothing features a purple kimono resembling a traditional Japanese yukata, with modifications tailored to the game's aesthetics.[20] She wears traditional Japanese accessories around her waist, including an obiage and an obijime.[18] The mitsudomoe emblem of Inazuma appears multiple times on her weapon and clothing. Mitsudomoe symbols are usually associated with the shinto god Hachiman, god of war and archery, reinforcing the Shogun's characterization as an experienced warrior.[20] To convey her composure, sovereignty, and sanctity, the creators made a unique set of motions for her. The character's elemental burst is inspired by Japanese Kendo, especially postures such as hassō-no-kamae, jōdan-no-kamae, and gedan-no-kamae, as well as movements such as noutou (納刀, sheathing the sword).[6] Her elemental skill underwent several changes during testing. It used to buff Beidou, another character in the game. However, in the official release, the skill no longer affects Beidou.[21] The Shogun's passive skill Chakra Desiderata forms a halo near the character. Some players find it uncomfortable to their eyes, so version 2.2 decreased the halo's brightness.[22]
Voice acting[edit]
Raiden Shogun's English voice actress is Anne Yatco, who dubbed Nobara Kugisaki in Jujutsu Kaisen.[23] Yatco has a mid-atlantic accent and serves as the voice actress of Raiden Ei, Raiden Makato, and Raiden Shogun.[24] She claimed in an interview that dubbing for Raiden Shogun has been a challenge for her: miHoYo has asked her to not speak in a robotic tone, yet the Shogun has a stern and heartless character, which proved difficult for Yatco. Thus, she has deliberately acted in a commanding way.[25]
The Chinese voice actress is Ju HuaHua, who is good at mature voices; her Japanese voice actress is Miyuki Sawashiro, known for her elegant and mature voice.[26]
Character story[edit]
Before Raiden Shogun appears in the game, the story has indirectly referenced her through legends and comments from other characters. As the Electro Archon ruling Inazuma, her name as a goddess is Baal, while the people of Inazuma call her Raiden Shogun. Baal is not one of the initial seven Archons. She pursues permanence, and rules Inazuma with an iron fist. Zhongli, the Geo Archon of Liyue, criticizes her style of governence. Baal believes that Visions, gifts from gods that enable elemental powers, have the potential to destabilize her country. Therefore, she enacted the sweeping Vision Hunt Degree to take back all Visions previously granted and ceased to give out new Visions.[27]
Raiden Shogun's true name is Raiden Ei, also known as Beelzebub as an Archon. She is the ruler of Inazuma.[28] The previous Electro Archon, Raiden Makoto, is her sister. They are a twin who together emerge victorious in the Archon War. Makoto, an expert administrator whose weakness lies in combat, subsequently created the Shogunate in Inazuma. Raiden Ei, a master of combat, supported her sister as a body double. Their diarchy is not known to the public. In a war called the cataclysm, Makoto falls, leaving Ei to the position of the Electro Archon, who continues using the name Baal inherited from her sister. Traumatized by the passing of friends and family, Raiden Ei embarks on a pursuit of eternity.[29] To avoid the erosion of time, Ei created a puppet named Raiden Shogun to manage Inazuma's affairs, while she secludes herself in the Plane of Euthymia.[30] Her subordinate and friend Yae Miko disagrees with her decision. After the traveller arrives at Inazuma, Miko discovers their ability to enter the Plane of Euthymia and trained the traveller in hopes of convincing Raiden Ei that her pursuit of eternity is futile. Eventually, with their concerted effort, the traveller and Miko changed Ei's mind.[28] Ei revokes the Vision Hunt Degree, re-evaluates her way of ruling Inazuma, and modifies the programming of the puppet, Raiden Shogun. [28][30] When designing the puppet, Ei has predicted a future change of heart, so she implanted a mechanism for the puppet to stay in its course. To demonstrate her resolve, Raiden Ei fights the puppet in Makoto's subspace for ages until she secures victory and gains recognition from Makoto's remaining memories.[31] She plants the seed of the Sacred Sakura of Inazuna given by her sister and revokes the Sakoku Decree.[32][31]
Reception[edit]
Upon her first appearance in the July 9, 2021 promotional video, Raiden Shogun has attracted player attention by drawing a sword from her chest, admonishing the traveller, and displaying her aura in the video.[26] Illustrators from around the world created numerous fanarts for her. Some cosplayers also dressed up as Raiden Shogun.[33] In a poll conducted in August 2021 by Japanese video game media INSIDE, Raiden Shogun was the most wanted Inazuma character, receiving nearly half of all votes.[34] Screen Rant has reported that, in HoYofest Malaysia 2021, yushirocos dressed up as Raiden Shogun and attracted copious fans.[35] In September, 2021, a week after Raiden Shogun became a playable character, her banner has generated 150 million dollars of revenue, far exceeding the monthly revenue in August[36]. Genshin Impact tops the sales ranking for mobile games in 42 countries and regions.[37][33] The generated revenue of her banner created a record exceeding all previous banners until her rerun in version 2.5.[33][38] A commentator for HK01 attributes her popularity to the excellent character design, widespread advertising, high player expectations, and the one-year anniversary of Genshin Impact: all purchases of the in-game currency Primogem are doubled, creating an incentive to spend in the game to "buy one get one free".[33]
In March, 2022, the Shogun (along with Kokomi) appears for a second time in a banner. Genshin Impact topped iOS charts in over 20 countries and regions.[39]
In terms of her character design, editor 南山虎 points out that Raiden Shogun's character design resembles Raiden Mei's Herrscher of Thunder form in Honkai Impact 3rd; they have the same voice actress in Chinese and English; and Mei's voice has become closer to the Shogun's.[26] Before Raiden Shogun's design was revealed, the Herrscher of Thunder form of Mei was even rumored to be the Shogun.[40] Commentator ライオン松本 posted on Famitsu that his favourite character is Raiden Shogun. He is attracted to the discrepency between the gallant and cool attack animation and her cuteness in the story (the cuteness arising from such discrepency is called gap moe, or ギャップ萌え).[41] Editor Sisi Jiang from Kotaku criticized the English voice acting, which does not accurately reflect the character's personality. Raiden Shogun is an arrogant character who also cares for the player in a sisterly manner. However, the English voice acting conveys the figure of a girlboss.[42]
The plot has also attracted praise from commentators. Sisi Jiang is fascinated by the Shogun's story. To pursue eternatiy and minimize change, the Shogun secludes herself from worldly matters in her Euthymia, commanding a puppet to rule on behalf of her. Thus, the essence of the Inazuma story is to resist the frigid rule of an artificial intelligence. Jiang also sees parallels between the Shogun's seclusion and silicon valley billionaires constructing bunkers.[30] Despite these praises, Jiang points out that the story felt incomplete: Raiden Ei's actions seem illogical, and the villain did not face the consequences of her actions. The additional content in version 2.5, however, turns the story around. The newly added story, according to Jiang, provides a relistic portrayal of grief and turned the plot from an idealogical conflict to a recovery from emotional trauma.[31] Jenni Lada from Siliconera posits that the first story quest of the Shogun resembles the stories of other female characters in the game. However, the second story quest turned the first one around, depicting the character's growth and providing a new perspective on her past. The improved experience of the second story quest gives Lada hope that other lackluster story quests may receive a fuller development in the future.[43]
In terms of gameplay, Raiden Shogun received generally positive reviews from video game medias, while some have argued that she is difficult to build and master. Kevin Wong from Screen Rant sees the Shogun as a good sub-DPS, providing high damage output with her Elemental Burst.[44] Game Rant's Hajrudin Krdzic states that Raiden Shogun is perceived to be a must-have character, which leads to the popularity of her banner. She is by far the best support character in Genshin Impact, and her character design is friendly to players who cannot obtain additional constellations as the difference between constellation zero and full constellation is not large.[38] Nahda Nabiilah contends that the Shogun has one of the most interesting mechanics in the game, but building her can be complicated and could lead to diminishing returns.[45][46] Chinese comentator 南山虎 believes that her skills will empower certain team compositions and that the Shogun could be the main damage dealer. However, players should be aware of the cost of building her and the need for specific characters acting as her support.[47] Editors from PC Gamer commented that the Shogun is similar with the other two Archons, Wendy and Zhongli, in that she is powerful in her own way.[48] Commentator Rebecca Jones from Rock, Paper, Shotgun summarized that there exists conflicting opinions on whether the Shogun is better fit as the main damage dealer or a supporting character. Viewing her as a support has gained a slight upper hand. Personally, Jones believed that the Shogun is powerful enough to lead the entire team.[49]
