Rainbow Dash is a fictional character who appears in the fourth incarnation (also referred to as the fourth generation or "G4") of Hasbro's My Little Pony toyline and media franchise, beginning with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (2010–2019). She is voiced by Ashleigh Ball.

Appearances[edit]

Friendship Is Magic[edit]

Rainbow Dash is a tomboy who loves adventure and athletic activities. She is also an avid prankster, and enjoys pulling pranks with Pinkie Pie. A native of Cloudsdale, she earned her cutie mark after creating a sonic rainboom while racing bullies during flight school, which simultaneously enabled the rest of the Mane Six to earn their cutie marks. After moving to Ponyville on her birthday (called her birth-iversary), she becomes the weather manager of the town and begins living in a cloud house above the town. She is first introduced as having a lifelong goal to join the Wonderbolts, an elite flying team. She progressively achieves her goal over the course of the series, joining the Wonderbolts Academy in season three, joining the Wonderbolts reserves in season four, and eventually a full member in season six. Although she displays an antipathy for intellectual pursuits such as studying, she eventually becomes avid reader of Daring Do novels, an Indiana Jones-esque Pegasus.

Representing the element of Loyalty, she helps Twilight Sparkle and her friends defeat several villains over the course of the series, including Nightmare Moon and Discord and eventually helps her fulfill her destiny to become a Princess. Following the events of My Little Pony: The Movie, she and her friends establish a School of Friendship to spread the Magic of Friendship to other non-pony races, where she becomes a loyalty teacher. At the end of the series, she and the other members of the Mane Six remain in contact as members of the Council of Friendship.

Rainbow Dash becomes a surrogate big sister to Scootaloo, a younger pegasus and a member of the Cutie Mark Crusaders who idolizes her. She is the only one of the Cutie Mark Crusaders' "big sisters" to not be biologically related to one of them.

Equestria Girls[edit]

Rainbow Dash makes cameo appearances in the Equestria Girls spin-off in scenes set in Equestria.

Pony Life[edit]

Rainbow Dash appears with the rest of the Mane Six as a main character in the spin-off My Little Pony: Pony Life.

Equestria Girls alternate version[edit]

An alternate, human version of Rainbow Dash appears as a main character in the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls spinoff, appearing as an athletic student of Canterlot High School. She is also the founder, lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter of the main characters' rock band, the Rainbooms. She gains superhuman speed as her geode power in the fourth film.

Development[edit]

Lauren Faust was inspired to create Rainbow Dash based on her childhood "Generation 1" toy Firefly, who was the main character in the original 1984 My Little Pony special, Rescue at Midnight Castle. She shares her name with a "Generation 3" main character.

Voice[edit]

Rainbow Dash's voice is provided by Ashleigh Ball, who also voices Applejack.

Reception[edit]

Niccole Pucci of The Mary Sue praised Rainbow Dash's athleticism and tomboyishness for defying conventional feminity in favor of highlighting the positive aspects of being tough, ambitious and active. Pucci also commented that as with the other main characters of the series, she contains notable character flaws, in her case, abrasiveness and arrogance.[2]

Kathleen Richter of the feminist Ms. magazine perceived the character as standing out for "having a perpetually maniacal expression" while the other characters are "cute and cuddly" in a promotional video clip. She accused the character of promoting a false stereotype of feminists as being "angry, tomboyish lesbians" and teaching girls that "girls that wear rainbows are butch".[3]

Analysis[edit]

Ethan Lewis of Den of Geek opined that Rainbow Dash is very concerned about her "cool" self-image and uses her cocky demeanor to cover her insecurities. This concern often impedes her ability to be a good friend, and often leads her into being reminded the value of humility and that friendships outweigh personal ambitions.[4]
