Rajat Bansal (born 25 July 1988) is an Indian Administrative Service officer from the 2012 batch of the Chhattisgarh cadre. During his career, he has served in several field and departmental positions, including as Collector of Dhamtari and Bastar, Municipal Commissioner of Raipur, Commissioner of the MGNREGA scheme, and Director of the Geology and Mining Department.[1][2]
Early life and education
Bansal was born in Haryana on 25 July 1988.[1] He completed a B.E. (Hons.) in Computer Science from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.[3]
He joined the Indian Police Service and trained at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, but then reappeared for the Civil Services Examination and becomes IAS after securing AIR 85 in 2011.[3]
Career
Early postings
After completing the foundation and training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Bansal was posted as Assistant Collector in Raigarh.[4] He later served in field positions in Raigarh,Rajnandgaon and Surajpur.[3]
Municipal Commissioner, Raipur (2016–2019)
Bansal was posted as Municipal Commissioner of the Raipur Municipal Corporation in 2016 and also worked as the CEO of Raipur Smart City Limited.[5] Several urban projects, including the redevelopment of the Jawahar Bazaar area and improvements in public spaces and civic facilitieswas done during this period.[6]
District Collector, Dhamtari (2019–2020)
As Collector of Dhamtari, Bansal’s work included implementation of Community Forest Rights in villages such as Jabarra,[7] a district awareness campaign on eye and organ donation,[8] and initiatives such as digital home-quarantine tracking and an online farm-produce platform during the COVID-19 pandemic.[9]
District Collector, Bastar (2020–2022)
Bansal took charge as Collector of Bastar district on 29 May 2020.[10] During his tenure, the district administration worked on local tourism promotion under the Aamcho Bastar campaign,[11] youth engagement activities under the Bastar Yuvoday programme,[12] and outreach programmes in remote tribal regions.
Reporting in The New Indian Express described his field visits to interior Maoist-affected villages.[13]
Local news outlets also covered his interaction with cultural groups and public events.[14][15]
He was transferred from Bastar in mid-2022, and several regional newspapers reported community farewells at the time of his departure.[16]
State-level assignments (2023–present)
In April 2023, Bansal was appointed Commissioner of the MGNREGA programme with additional responsibilities in rural housing.[17][18]
He was later posted in the Commercial Tax department, handling responsibilities linked to GST.[19]
In April 2025, he took charge as Director of the Geology and Mining Department and as Managing Director of the Chhattisgarh State Mineral Development Corporation, along with the designation of Special Secretary (Good Governance and Convergence).[20][21]
Recognition
Bansal was included among district officials recognised by The Indian Express in its Excellence in Governance Awards (2020–21) for the THINK-B entrepreneurship initiative in Bastar.[22]
