Ralph Phillip Hughes (September 25, 1916 - September 4, 2016) was a prominent pastor in Michigan for over 60 years, beginning in 1945.[1][2]

Biography[edit]

Ralph Phillip Hughes was born on September 25, 1916 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Ralph Bloomfield Hughes and Lorene (Pike). He was raised on a farm in a solidly middle class family and graduated from Battle Creek Central High School before becoming an electrician. He served in World War II, working on civil defense projects and married Margaret Lucille Coville (1919 - 2004) on August 31, 1936.[3] His draft card states that he had worked for American Steel and Wire Company as a salesman before the war.

Hughes first entered ministry in the mid-1940s, and became the pastor of a local Assemblies of God church in his home town of Battle Creek. He became known for hosting meetings in unconventional places, such as rented opera houses.[4] In 1948, he moved to Hastings, Michigan where he again became an Assembly of God pastor and gained prominence.[5] He moved to Kentucky and Texas during the mid-1950s, and again pastored churches, but returned to Michigan by the late-1950s, and pastored a church in Clio, Michigan for 29 years. He also volunteered his electrical skills for Clio Public Schools.

In 1968, he visited South Africa, where he preached through an interpreter.

In the late 1980s, Hughes moved to Blaine, Washington, jokingly saying "Go West, Old Man." By the early 2000s, he was active again in Michigan, and was hosting a Bible study in Flushing, Michigan, in 2010 at the age of 94. Hughes died on his Michigan farm in his sleep on September 4, 2016, at age 99.

Family[edit]

Hughes had four children, three of whom are still living, as well as 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. His family is well-known in the state of Michigan.

His eldest daughter, Barbara Ann (born 1937), married missionary Edgar Louton in 1958. The ceremony was hosted at Hughes’ Clio church, and another ceremony was hosted at Albert Louton’s church in Detroit. Hughes and Albert Louton conducted both jointly.
