Azar Mohebbi Tehrani (Persian: آذر محبی تهرانی‎), better known as Ramesh (Persian: رامش‎, November 13, 1946), was an Iranian singer of Persian classical, Folk, pop music, Jazz, Funk Music and Rock Music. [1]

Early life and career[edit]

Azar Mohebbi was born on November 13, 1946, in Tehran, Iran. Ramesh Started singing in Iranian movies in 1964 but she preferd to finish her studying and after one year she started her career as a professional singer on the Persian traditional music radio program "Yek Shakhe Gol" (Persian: يك شاخه گل‎) in 1965, with the song " Parastow Jan" (Persian: پرستو جان‎) composed and arranged by maestro Ataollah Khorram with lyrics by Lobat Vala.[2] Ramesh was from a family where they were supporting her to continue her career contrariwise the families that was not allowing women to sing.

Personal life[edit]

Ramesh born in a big family with 1 brother and 3 sisters. Unfortunately she lost her younger sister at the age oh 12 in 1970, this death had a huge impact on Ramesh and her songs. [3] She prefered her family more because that she didn't married. She lived with her mother until she passed away in 2016 in Los Angeles . [4]

Before The Revolution[edit]

Ramesh moved from Persian Traditional Music to Iranian Pop Music in 1968. She started singing duets with Viguen and from that year she has been called as the first Pop Music Lady. In 1972, she started recordings with a studio orchestra. “Khorshid Khoonoom” was her recorded song in funk. “Delakam” was also an opening gate for the typical funky sound of Ramesh with its wah wah guitars.

In 1973, she intered the gate of rock music with Ghorooba Ghashangan which included hard drum beats. Also the harmonica used in the song also gave reference to soundtracks of Ennio Morricone made for spaghetti westerns. “Tohmat” was the first song in Iran that has been singed as Polyphony. “Dard Ashengi” also surrounds our ears with its jazz guitar, sudden stops and ve brasses. In this years she also recorded “Pishwas” which was a progressive pop ballad with polyphonic technique. While in “Ziyarat” , she made a fusion of Indian and Persian pop with her usage of tabla. Babak Afshar is on of composers and an arrangers in this period especially when he arranged Fariouz song “Ka’an Azzaman” in the name of “Tabestoon”. One of the other hits of Ramesh in 70s was “Asmar Asmar” which was an mutual folk song of Kurds and Azeris. The arrangement and the harmonization of the song also belonged to Naser Chesmazar.

“Moondanam Az Boodanet” In 1976 was the most energetic song of Ramesh. The composition and the arrrangement belonged to Manouchehr Chesmazar. This song was a trademark of Ramesh where rock and funk created a perfect fusion, she had opened the doors of certain things in Iran even though what she opened would be limited with the music of diaspora

In 1977 “Eshgh Gonahkar” that was a native mus has been realesd. This composition was leaded by strings with a dynamic performance of disco days and was quite affected by both eastern and western music. Ramesh after racording “Vasvaseh”, She becomed a Persian Dalida with progressive pop song. This composition also belongs to Manouchehr Chesmazar. “Roodkhooneha” which was Ramesh's most screened hit on Iran National TV was a composition of Sadegh Nojooki.With this song Ramesh was born again in middle of 70s. “Montazer” was her first experience in composing and song writing but this song also has becomed one of her best recordings after Roodkhooneha. Ramesh had also an experience as an actress in “Khiyaliti” movie but it also was her last role in cinema. [7]

After The Revolution[edit]

She immigrated to London a few months before the revolution. After the Islamic Revolution her family also immigrated and a few monthes they met in Los Angeles and lived there. In the first years of immigration Ramesh recorded three songs in memory of her hometown tehran, two of them were called “Tehroon” and “Ghorbat” were composed and writthen by herself.

After 15 years of being away of the stage she realesd another album in memory of Iran called "3rd World (Jahane Sevom)" in 1995 and in 2002 she recorded her last album "Rumi" with Dariush and Faramarz Aslani. From 2002 she left the stage until today, In an interview with Javavn Magazine She said that her silence is a protest for not allowing Iranian women to sing and she will continue this protest until Iran's freedom.
