Ramesh Awtaney
Ramesh Awtaney (born 24 October 1966) is an Indian entrepreneur and business leader. He is the founder and chairman of iSON Group, which owns iSON Experiences, iSON Technologies, iSON Innovation, iSON Tower and iSON Foundation.[1] He aims to scale his business up to 100,000 employees by 2020.[2] He has promised to create 4,000 new jobs in Africa through iSon Group.[3] He is an investor in Indian startup Baxi.[4] His firm iSON BPO Ltd has received Sh5.1 billion from two equity funds to power its expansion across Africa, while Gulf Capital and AfricInvest Invested US$ 51 Million Into iSON Xperiences, the largest customer service and outsourcing provider in Sub-Saharan Africa.[5][6]
Early life and education[edit]
Awtaney was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh and grew up in Rajasthan.
He earned his Bachelors in Engineering from MBM College of Engineering. It was followed with a Master’s degree in International Trade from New Delhi’s Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.
Professional career[edit]
Awtaney started his career at the Escotel as a Senior Manager following which he joined Ericsson India as the Director - Business Management. He moved to IBM during 2001 and was appointed as Vice President and GM Asia Pacific Comms Sector – IBM GTS, and succeeded in gaining a milestone 10-year contract in 2004 with Vodafone and a multi-million dollar deal with Maxis in 2009.[7]
At iSON, he started operations in the year of 2010, and proceeded to set up operations in sixteen countries in the African continent. Sanjay Kapoor, former CEO of Bharti Airtel, also joined him at iSON in the same year, with a vision to improve the employment prospects of english-speaking youth in sub-Saharan Africa. Awtaney also serves on the board of several other start-ups like Athenta and mVentus.
In addition, Awtaney was conferred with the “Entrepreneur of the Year” Champion in Biz Awards.[8] This was during the 2016 ASSOCHAM India Africa Trade and Investment Forum.[9]
