Ran Lahav
Ran Lahav (born April 17, 1954) is an Israeli-born American philosopher, internationally active in developing philosophical activities for the general public. Since the early 1990s he has been a major figure in the philosophical practice movement, has given numerous workshops and retreats around the world, and published books and articles.[1]
Since the early 2010s he has been developing formats of philosophical contemplation, known as Deep Philosophy.[2]
Education
Ran Lahav received his Bachelor Degree in philosophy and psychology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 1988 he completed his PhD in philosophy at the University of Michigan with a doctoral thesis on the nature of subjective experience, as well as a Master’s degree in psychology.[2]
Philosophical career
Lahav’s early academic work focused on philosophy of psychology. His interests shifted to practical philosophy in 1992, when he joined the then-nascent philosophical practice movement, which seeks to make philosophy relevant to individuals’ everyday lives.[1] He then taught philosophical counseling at Haifa University, gave public presentations on the topic, published articles, initiated and co-organized the first international conference on philosophical counseling (University of British Columbia, 1994),[2][3] and edited the anthology Essays on philosophical counseling (1995), the first book in English in the field.[1]
Over the years, Lahav’s approach to philosophical practice developed in three main phases, expressing three visions of how philosophy can contribute to individuals’ lives. Until the late 1990s he worked on developing the prevailing view that the role of philosophical practice is to provide thinking tools to help counselees address their personal issues.[1]
In the second phase, which lasted until the early 2010s, he envisioned a form of philosophizing that would help to elevate life and transform it, with the help of past philosophical texts. Inspired by notable historical philosophers, he developed philosophical methods of self-transformation and used them in counseling and group activity.[4] He published a comprehensive overview of this approach in his book Stepping out of Plato’s Cave (2016).
In the third phase of his work he developed contemplative (semi-meditative) forms of philosophizing, called “Deep Philosophy,” aimed at producing deep philosophical experiences. His international Deep Philosophy Group, formed in 2017, offers group activities, online and in retreats,[2] in which participants contemplate together from their inner depth on short philosophical texts.[5] An overview of this approach appears in Lahav’s book What is Deep Philosophy? (2021).
