Rangoli Chandel is an Indian acid attack survivor and elder sister of Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut. [1] Currently, she works as Kangana Ranaut's manager. [2]
Early life and the attack
Rangoli was attacked with acid by Avinash Sharma and Prem Singh on October 6, 2006. Avinash was from her hometown and a lover who was obsessed with Rangoli, and Prem was a welder who was Avinash's accomplice in the crime.[3][4] The main motive of the acid attack was the rejection of Avinash Sharma's marriage proposal.[5]
She was taken to the hospital and underwent 54 surgeries over the span of 5 years. She lost one of her ears, and 90% of the vision in one of her eyes, due to which she had to undergo a retina transplant. She also has a dysfunctional breast, even after receiving the best medical treatment in the country.[1] [3] [5] [6] Her sister Kangana supported her throughout her journey, looking after her when other family members failed to do so.[7][8] The physical pain was one thing, but the mental trauma she faced was immense. Her parents would faint whenever they saw her. They would often express anxiety about her future and who would marry her.
Avinash Sharma and Prem Singh were later arrested and the prosecution chargesheeted them under section 120 B, 326 and 506 of the IPC for hatching a conspiracy, physical assault and intimidation. They were sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment by Chief Judicial Magistrate K K Shukla. [9]
Controversies
Tweets on Nepotism
Rangoli has made a number of tweets on the subject of nepotism and has frequently mentioned Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Sonam K Ahuja and Ananya Panday as active members of a nepotism gang.[10][2] [11][12]. She also accused actors who are part of the nepotism gang of trying to sabotage Kangana Ranaut's career.
Tweets on Politics and Hate Speech
In April 2020, Rangoli's tweet sought the suspension of the 2024 general elections, as she was convinced that the current ruling party would win the election anyway. She suggested they should lead the people of India into another term without being democratically elected, thereby saving the resources generally utilized during elections. [13][14] On April 15, Chandel took to Twitter to express her views on the Tablighi Jamaat. The tweet, filled with hate speech and expletives, caused a significant reaction on Twitter, and some netizens requested Twitter and Mumbai Police to take action against Rangoli Chandel.[15][16] After a few days, Twitter suspended Chandel's account for allegedly ‘spreading hate’.[17][15] [16]
