Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal, (born 26 Dec 1975) is an officer of the Indian Army and the first Indian to climb the Seven Summits and Mount Everest three times.[1] He is a veteran of more than 30 mountaineering expeditions across seven continents that include Mount Everest expedition four times.
Biography
Early Life and Education
Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal is a third-generation soldier who was born on 26 December 1975 to Sh Onkar Singh, a Havildar in the Indian Army.[2] His family is from Badhori of Samba District in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
He completed his primary and secondary education from Army School, Ratnuchak. He cleared the Officer Examination (Army Cadet College) and joined Indian Military Academy, Dehradun in 1998.
Mountaineering
Col. Jamwal underwent a course in mountaineering at High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), Gulmarg where he discovered his love for mountaineering.[3]
He is one of the few Indians to have such a varied experience in mountaineering with 30 peaks under his belt which includes Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world, Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak of South America, Mount Elbrus,[4] the highest peak of Europe, Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak of Africa, Carstensz Pyramid, the highest peak of Australia and Mount Denali, the highest peak of North America.

Achievements
Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal, VSM bar is a known rescue specialist of Army.[5] In the recent case of massive disaster at Everest base camp in aftermath of Nepal earthquake on 25 April 2015, Indian Army team led by Col Jamwal, VSM bar helped in the rescue of more than 50 injured climbers & 19 fatal casualties.
Cleaning Campaigns
Under the leadership of Col Jamwal, The Indian Army Everest Team has done India Proud by carrying out back to back cleaning campaigns in the Everest Region.[6] In 2013, Indian Army Team cleared more than 4000 Kg of garbage from higher camps of Everest including Camp-I, Camp-II, Camp-III and Camp-IV, also called as death zone because of very low oxygen. The Tourism department of Nepal & Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) commended the efforts of the Indian Army Team and also gave them appreciation certificate. This was widely appreciated by the environment agencies and citizens around the world.[7]
In 2015 during the Massive disaster of 25 Apr 2015 in which the whole Nepal was shaken, Indian Army Team led by Col. Jamwal at Everest Base Camp helped the avalanche victims in terms of medical aid, shelter & food. After the evacuation, the Indian Army team also cleared approximately 3,000 Kg of garbage from Everest region which was scattered all around the Khumbu Glacier because of the massive avalanche. Four Foreign climbers also joined the Indian Army in their noble cause. Indian Army team not only cleared the garbage from Everest base camp but also brought it down to Namche Bazaar thus getting accolades from Nepali & foreign climbers.[8]
Awards and Honours
On 31 August 2013, Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal was awarded highest National award for adventure “TENZING NORGAY NATIONAL ADVENTURE AWARD” in recognition of his exemplary and fearless leadership, conspicuous courage in the pursuit of adventure and outstanding achievement in the field of mountaineering.[9]
He was awarded Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) by President of India on 15 January 2015.[10] On same date next year (15 January 2016) he was awarded a bar to his VSM.
He was awarded Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) Gold Medal[11] on 18 November 2017 for his achievements in mountaineering. He was awarded Sher-E-Kashmir Sports Award by J&K government on 26 January 2016. Maharaja Gulab Singh Award by Member of Parliament Dr. Karan Singh. SPCC appreciation 2015 SPCC appreciation 2013
