Rashmi Misra
Rashmi Misra is best known as the founder and chairperson of VIDYA (Vidya Integrated Development For Youth and Adults),[1][2] an organization dedicated to empowering lesser privileged individuals in India and providing them with an education that they previously didn't have access to.
Education[edit]
Misra grew up in an army background that landed her in different schools during her years of early education.[3] She would eventually attend Lady Sri Ram College in Delhi, where she would go on to obtain a degree in German and Public Relations.[3]
Work history[edit]
In addition to working for Lufthansa airlines as a ground staff member, Misra had also been employed at the Austrian Embassy.[3] Prior to founding VIDYA, she had been a German teacher in Delhi where she lectured university students for over a decade.[4]
VIDYA[edit]
In 1985, Misra was disturbed by the gap in the educational system that existed between those who had access to prestigious schools and those who did not, Misra set out to make a difference. As a result she founded VIDYA Schools. [1]
VIDYA is a non government organization, run by 350-plus regular employees and 5,000 volunteers. Its mission is to educate and empower the less privileged, namely youth, women, and children, through integrated methods and initiating and implementing progressive social change. It was started at her home with just five girls, but soon transitioned into a schools that had higher student capacities. The agenda consists of basic literacy programs in English, computers, skills training, women's health, women's rights, entrepreneurship, and environmental courses. Since its inception, VIDYA schools have impacted the lives of 220,000 underprivileged families in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.[5]
Vidya was one of only two New Delhi based programs featured during Hillary Clinton's state visit to India in 1995.[2]

She is a mother of two sons[6] and has a husband who, prior to the start of VIDYA, taught at the India Institute of Technology in Delhi.[4] She currently lives in Mumbai.[2]
